How to mend your clothes

Come and enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere of mending your clothes.

Two new workshop dates as part of our Get Frome Mending project.

Saturday 14th November
Saturday 5th December
11am-1pm
Frome Library, upstairs

If you would like specific advice or support with mending, book into the dedicated small group session.
Holes in your clothes? Button fallen off? Tear in a favourite shirt? Things lying about waiting for that mend? Here’s your opportunity to fix them in this hands on session.
Volunteer stitchers and menders from the Everyone Needs Pockets can help work out what needs doing and how to fix it, supporting you to mend your own clothes.
What we can help with:
Buttons and fasteners
Taking up hems and some fitting adjustments
Mending and darning holes
Advice on how you might repair a piece of clothing, including zips.

Threads of resistance- A day of mending our event part of @sustainablefashionweek_uk

We had 46 people come to our mending day including some of our wonderful Pocketeer volunteers! We collectively mended 44 mends from trousers, shorts, skirts, jumpers to toys and even a bee keeping suit!

Kim bought her sister along as Kim normally does her sister’s mending and now she has learnt some of the skills to do her own mending.

Steven came to our last mending day earlier this year and mended one leg of his jeans, this time he mended the other leg and he passed on the mending skills he had learnt to Ben who came along with a similar rip in his jeans! This is what it is all about! Learn a skill and pass it on, and keep our clothes going for longer, and maybe turn them into works of art along the way!

This way of documenting our mends also feels like a work of art, can you spot the bee suit? taken in Frome, Somerset by @everyoneneedspockets

A GIANT PROBLEM

This amazing giant has been handmade by some wonderful Pocketeers and on Saturday for @sustainablefashionweek_uk the Giant paraded around the streets of Frome to highlight the stark contrast between the effects of fabrics created from fossil fuels such as polyester, acrylics and nylon, and fabrics created from plants such as linen and cotton on the natural environment. The Giant visited our Threads of Resistance- A day of mending at Frome Town Hall and also visited @fromewardrobecollective clothes swap!
The Giant was accompanied by our marvellous @fromesofficialtowncrier thank you to the @thecheeselorduk for taking time away from selling cheese to cry for us again!

Thank you and credit to @emmatoddstudio for the lovely photos taken in Frome, Somerset by @everyoneneedspockets

Our first event for @sustainablefashionweek_uk 2026 on Saturday we sat in the Westway shopping centre mending our clothes. We mended and chatted to members of the public walking past on a busy Saturday morning in town. Hoping to inspire and encourage others to think about and mend their own clothes.

Stitch It Don’t Ditch It a gentle act of disruption that demonstrates the pleasure and necessity of garment repair. A movement created by artist Suzi Warren @streetstitching

Thank you to our amazing pocketeers for coming and stitching and a few new people too, which is always lovely!

Thanks to the @westwayshoppingcentre for letting us sit in the space

And thanks to Maggie aged 6.5 who took some of these wonderful photos for us ✨ taken in Frome, Somerset by @everyoneneedspockets

🪡STITCH IT DON’T DITCH IT🪡

🪡SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 11AM-12NOON IN THE WESTWAY🪡

Come and join our Street Stitching demonstration to mend your broken clothes out in public for an hour. It’s a way to come together to encouraging everyone to mend their belongings as a practical and joyful solution to waste and over consumption.
🪡WHEN AND WHERE
Please meet by the bridge between the Westway and the Library on the Ellenbray side at 10.30am on Saturday 26th September. We will set up and then sit and stitch from 11am - 12noon
🪡WHAT TO BRING
Bring as little as possible with you!
Something to mend for an hour, a chair or stool to sit on (ideally folding so it’s easy to carry to and from the event) and a banner saying ‘Stitch it don’t ditch it’ to attach to the back of your chair…and that’s it.
🪡BANNERS
Bring a Banner or sign to attach to your chair saying ’Stitch it don’t ditch it’. These can be anything from the beautiful stitched banners I know some of you have already made to a hand written sign taped to the chair back!
🪡WEATHER
The weather forecast is currently showing bright sunshine and 19 degrees! If however this changes we are hoping to go ahead whatever the weather so please wear/bring appropriate clothing
🪡WHAT TO DO
We will arrange our chairs in a line through the Westway in pairs so that we have someone to chat to while we mend

Community mending day. Bring broken clothes and repair together. Share skills, get help, and save garments from landfill.
Come one, come all with your piles of broken clothes. We will help each other with inspiration and advice. Let’s fix 100 items in one day!
Join the A Day of Mending!
Drop in whenever you want between 10am and 4pm, come and go or stay the whole day.
How many items can Frome mend in one day? We’re going to aim for 100+ items! Yes!
Find your piles of broken clothes - from holey jumpers to a torn shirt - and bring them along to fix them in the lovely company of everyone else getting through their mending pile - an ultra satisfying day saving clothes from the bin.
People from the Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Network will be there fixing their own clothes. We can all help each other, sharing advice and skills and inspiration. Patch in a way you’d never imagined, visible and invisible.
Are you struggling to mend your clothes yourself? Maybe your eyesight or hands make it hard? No problem, come along and we will do our best to help.
Nothing to mend? Come and mend for a friend/neighbour. Or help someone else on the day.

Exciting funding news. Earlier this summer we applied for some funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and we have been awarded the funding for our ‘Get Frome Mending’ project.

This funding will enable us to carry on with lots of the work we have already been doing like our How To Mend Your Clothes workshops, our really successful Mammoth Mend day, we held earlier this year, and try out lots of our ideas we haven’t yet been able to put into action.

Watch this space over the next two years. Come and join us to learn mending skills and let’s see how much we can mend in two years!
