Florists: Substitution szn is upon us!!! 😳

I had to substitute, not one, not two, but three varieties of flowers in this wedding. And I wanted to see how long it would take me.

I set the clock and got to work! I found each item on my summary page, clicked on each one that needed to be subbed out and swapped in a comparable replacement with a similar cost.

I slapped the stop watch ⏱️ and saw 2:42 🤯

It took less than 3 minutes to swap out 3 flowers while protecting my profit margin!! 😮‍💨

Come build 225 bud vases with me!! I call this “layering” and use @everystem_ for my recipes. By calculating how many of each stem I’ll want for the bud vases as a whole, I can get a really fun variety of flowers displayed through the whole venue! I call it my signature look ;)

We were planning to have lunch, but her grandpa passed away the night before. 🥺

I was a bridesmaid in her wedding, I designed all her wedding flowers, and I know just how much she and her family loved that sweet man.

I had to send flowers, but I couldn’t get all the way down to New Braunfels with my schedule. So, of course, I reached out to an EveryStem member and flower friend to handle the design and delivery for me.

My favorite season is fall. 🍂

💐 I got married in October.

🦃 Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

🎃 I love decorating with and flowering pumpkins.

“One of the hardest parts for me has always been trusting the flower math,” Vanessa explains. “Before EveryStem, I would panic buy extra flowers and greenery on the day of the wedding and end up with far too many leftovers. Let’s talk real numbers, because sometimes seeing it in black and white is the wake-up call we need. Say you over-order by just 10% on every event. Doesn’t sound like much, right? But let’s see what that looks like over time.

Average wedding flower cost: $2,000 in wholesale product

Over-ordering by 10%: $200 in extra stems per event

If you do 20 weddings per year: $4,000 in unnecessary flower costs

That’s $4,000 that could have been profit. Or new equipment. Or a much-needed vacation. Instead, it’s sitting in funky water (or your trash can).

And that’s just the flower cost. When you factor in the time spent processing and managing those extra stems, the real cost is even higher.

Over-ordering might feel like playing it safe, but as someone who’s worked with hundreds of florists, I know from experience that it’s one of the biggest profit killers in our industry. The florists who consistently hit high profit margins? They’re not the ones buying extra “just in case.” They’re the ones who know exactly how many stems they need and order accordingly.

So how do you stop over-ordering without risking running short? It starts with flower recipes. Not vague Pinterest-inspired ideas or mental notes. Actual recipes with real stem counts, broken down by variety or function. I share my exact process in this blog post!

Are you undercutting because you work from a home studio?

The low overhead lie!

“If you genuinely have lower overhead than a competitor with a storefront, a warehouse, and employees, that is a real advantage. But here is how you should use it:

Charge the same prices they charge. Deliver the same value. And keep the difference as profit.

If a competitor with high overhead needs to charge $100 per hour to make their business work, and you can deliver the same quality at the same price with lower overhead, you should charge $100 per hour too. Your reward for having lower overhead is higher margins, not the obligation to undercut everyone.

Your customers are not paying for your overhead. They are paying for the value you deliver. If you deliver $100 worth of value, charge $100. What it costs you to deliver that value is your business, not theirs.

A client once told me he charges less because he works from home and “it would not be fair” to charge what the big companies charge. I asked him: Fair to whom? Not to his family, who subsidizes his business with their space and patience. Not to himself, earning less per hour than a teenager at a fast food restaurant. Not to his future, because he will never build any equity or retirement at these rates.

The only people benefiting from his “fairness” were his customers. And they were getting a fantastic deal at his expense.

Ask yourself: Am I using my low overhead as a competitive advantage that builds my wealth? Or am I using it as an excuse to underprice myself into poverty?

Because there is a difference between running lean and running broke. And too many home-based business owners have confused the two.

Your family is subsidizing your business. Your home is subsidizing your business. Your future retirement is subsidizing your business.

At some point, you have to ask whether the business is worth the subsidy. Or whether you would be better off working for someone else and actually getting paid what your time is worth.“
