Mary in Film — Faith, Spoken Softly

In Jesus of Nazareth, the 1977 epic mini series by glorious Italian director Franco Zeffirelli -
there is a moment that never raises its voice—
and yet it shakes me every time.

Jesus returns to Nazareth.
He reads from the Torah.
And then he says the unthinkable:
“Today, in your hearing, the Scriptures are fulfilled.”

The room erupts.
Shock. Fear. Outrage.

And behind the women’s screen,
Mary—played with aching restraint by Olivia Hussey—
repeats the words quietly to herself:

Today, in your hearing…

She knows what this means.
As a devout Jewish woman,
raised in the Temple,
she understands the weight of what her son has claimed.
The danger.
The consequences.

And yet—she repeats it.

Not loudly.
Not defiantly.
But faithfully.

This is the courage that undoes me.
Not the courage of shouting truth,
but the courage of recognising it
before the world is ready.

Franco Zeffirelli gives us a Mary of quiet strength—
a mother who believes,
even when belief will cost her everything.

In times like ours—
when truth is punished,
when standing for what is right comes at a price—
this scene feels like a lesson in grace.

Faith does not always roar.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it trembles.
Sometimes it simply repeats the truth,
even when the room turns against it.

This is the Mary who moves me.
And this is what real courage looks like. We need it so desperately.

She is everywhere.

Mary in Jerusalem — Church of the Holy Sepulchre

How could sorrow look beautiful all at once?

It’s a question I returned to often as I sat at the foot of this statue in Jerusalem—
on the site where Mary is said to have stood as she beheld her son on the cross.

Adorned in jewels,
a golden sword pierced her heart.

I was in Jerusalem studying Hebrew at an ulpan and conducting research for my novel.
It was a mystical yet demanding season—one that still feels like a dream.

I had the privilege of returning again and again to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
to contemplate, to pray, and to meditate on Mary.

I have always found strength in her sorrows.
Perhaps because within each pain, there is a resurrection.

Yet this sorrow—the most unbearable of all—
she appears radiant, and still in agony.

Her son is dying violently.
The temple hierarchy and elders she once knew are tearing her world apart.

She is alone.
She is suffering.

And yet—still beautiful.

This mystery held me captive as I gazed upon her.

Through tears, I felt her pain—unbearable—
and yet I also glimpsed her strength: her faith.

We cannot dehumanise Mary.
She was a woman. She was human. She had a human heart.

This was a dark chapter of her life.
And yet, the grace that radiates from her in this darkness
is one I return to often.

Perhaps in moments when the world itself feels crucified,
it is in Mary’s sorrow-filled heart
that we find strength—

and, God willing,
the grace to carry on. #VirginMary

Hello, and thank you for being here. 🌍

Across continents and centuries, cultures and languages, the Virgin Mary keeps appearing — painted, carved, woven, prayed to, whispered about.

I’m creating Everywhere Virgin Mary to share images of Mary from around the world: how she is seen, imagined, and loved in different places. Alongside these images, I’ll be offering quiet reflections — moments of pondering who she was, who she is, and what she continues to mean for people everywhere.

I’m deeply passionate about Mary. I’m currently writing a novel about her life, and along that journey I’ve encountered a wealth of extraordinary images — tender, powerful, unexpected — that felt too beautiful not to share.

Mary may be the most recognisable woman in human history. In a world marked by division, conflict, and noise, there is something about her presence that endures. Something gentle. Something unifying. Something human.

This page is an invitation to pause, to look, and to ponder.
Because wherever you go — she is already there.

Welcome. 🌹 (oh and this image is in Genova, Italy - where I’m based ♥️)

Crowned with stars. Held by the moon. Cloaked in the sun.

This is how the Book of Revelation describes a woman giving birth to a child who will “rule the lands.” Scholars still argue over who she is; yet somehow agree the child is Jesus.

I love this image of Mary anyway. Crowned in stars, perhaps the reward for faith.

Because her faith cost her everything, at first. A child out of wedlock. A community that shamed her by naming her, not her son. Refuge in exile. Birth without shelter. Losing Joseph. Losing her home. Losing her son and burying him in silence, forbidden even to grieve until the Sabbath passed.

Jung once asked, in Answer to Job: where is God when a man watches his son torn apart? How do we call this love?

I’ve debated this with my boyfriend (a Jungian) for years. But I always land in the same place: the answer was Mary. She watched. She suffered. She was exiled again after the resurrection, dying far from Jerusalem, the city she loved. And still she said: I am the handmaid of the Lord — let it be done.

She meant it. Every time.

Maybe that unbending faith is what finally broke — not from doubt, but from the sheer weight of surrender. And what met her on the other side of that final surrender was her son. And stars. And a crown.

Maybe this is the reward reserved for women who suffer quietly (who don’t get the songs or the statues men do) but who heaven remembers anyway, and holds the most sacred.

Happy Feast of the Assumption. To every woman carrying quietly what no one sees —

you too will be crowned with stars. by @everywherevirginmary

Song of Songs. Shir HaShirim. How I love you ❤️ by @everywherevirginmary

When I cry, I turn to Mary

This image in Genova of Our Lady of Sorrows is a common one I go to.

I received troubling news of a friend of mine in critical condition. And the news came to me like an anchor being released into a dark sea - freefall with nothing holding it back

In these moments it’s Mary I go to

I’m fair from my friend and it’s in Mary I go to step in for me.

To be there.
To support.

But most importantly to heal

Whether it’s the pain of this world or the pain of my friend, I turn to Mary. The way any child would when needing his mother.

Whatever pain you’re going through - I’m thinking of you. And Mary is with you.

She’s everywhere

Perusing through stalls on Piazza Dante in Napoli while going creative work there. Stumbled upon these lovely cards - the first is of Mary’s apparition in Akita, Japan and the other s tender mother-child image. I’m always delighted to find her….simply everywhere #everywherevirginmary #virginmary #akita #napoli #holycards by @everywherevirginmary

Resurrection. I haven’t posted in a while. And that’s my bad. It’s a mixture of laziness but also life simply being life. Been dealing with some ups and downs and lots of work travel in May. Not bad ups and downs but ups and downs are bringing towards where you need to be. On Sunday I was in church and took a picture of this. I imagine what my novel cover will look like. And I imagined this image to be there. There’s something about this image that calls me very much and I hope one day when the time comes for my novel to be published and I can work with the publication for the design or at least have some sort of input because normally that’s give-and-take and a miracle into its own. I hope I can include this image in it. This is I hope that you guys can all be patient with me as I slowly return back to posting. I have lots of content I’ve been everywhere so far. But life has been laughing. And just as we don’t deplore Jesus or Mary feels quite years between 13 and 30 hopefully you don’t deplore me for those quiet days in the month of May. by @everywherevirginmary

Mary in Naples - Mother’s Day 🇮🇹🌹🌹🌹

It’s Mother’s Day - and in south Italy (mainly Naples) roses are given.

I’m in my ancestors town of Torre del Greco, now a suburb of Naples and on the slope of the famed volcano Mount Vesuvius between the ancient lost cities Pompeii and Herculaneum - I’ve been to both and can’t help but wonder “are one of you my ancestors or distant relative?”

Either way I’m here visiting family. And chose to go to mass - the same church where my great-grandma and her siblings were baptised.

In Naples, roses are given to mothers and so the sea of roses given to the Virgin Mary was precious. As well as the songs to her.

This statue of the statue that Torresi (people from Torre del Greco) are fond of, dressing her in coral (Torre is famous for coral jewellery which is symbolic of Naples) and parading her during the feast of the immaculate conception.

I found it so moving the roses and song to her. I’ve just come back from Egypt too where I wondered once more places in Cairo where she may have raised Jesus for a time. We forgot of her as just a mother having to wake up early, feed her child and full of same ups and downs like all mothers.

It’s not an easy job to be a mother. But to love has never been easy.

And to be a mother is the purest form of love - of course not everyone experiences it that way and my heart mourns for them.

But to those mothers wondering if you’re doing a good job or exhausted from sleep deprivation or battling with a teen, this is for you.

She sees you.

She was you.

She’s everywhere ♥️

Mary in Naples 🇮🇹

I’m in my ancestral lands and this city has such a relationship to the Virgin.

From the saying “q’a maronna t’accompagn’!” (May Our Lady be with you) said when leaving or going with caution to the street art with her everywhere. Mary may not be Neapolitan, but there’s certainly a strong case.

These images may appear controversial. They are. But the show Mary as a presence in everyday fight for justice, for peace and for equality.

Some find it scandalous.

I find it just another interpretation of a city’s love for her.

She’s everywhere
