Leading with Love Spotlight! Gabriel and Ms. Courtney Tuggle

Gabriel's face lit up as Ms. Courtney walked into the room. Smiling from ear to ear, he said, “I thought you wouldn't come,” and patted the chair for her to sit down with him. “Hold on let me put my stuff down,” she said, and he patiently stood and waited for her to put her things down and come sit with him.

The smile on his face and his enthusiasm in the moment are the result of Ms. Courtney's patience, diligence, and expertise in her work as a paraprofessional, and as a valued member of our community. It was a beautiful moment that made all the adults in the room who witnessed this smile and say "Awwww."

Often educators are raising their own children, while building deep and genuine relationships with students at school, and this is not always an easy task. This is the case with Ms. Courtney and Gabriel, and a beautiful example of the growth a student can make when we lead with love. I could not let the week pass without finding a way to publicly appreciate and bring loving attention to Ms. Courtney and her work with Gabriel.

Thank you, Ms. Courtney, for #LeadingWithLove.

Here we go! Welcome back, scholars!
We are ready for a new year of learning, discovery, and fun.
The school year launched with our traditional first day parade at both East End and Brookland Campuses.
Extra thanks to all the guests who helped us mark this special day: Councilmember Wendell Felder, DC State Board of Education President and Ward 7 representative Eboni-Rose Thompson, ‘Abdu’l-Karim Ewing-Boyd from the office of the Deputy Mayor of Education, and Stokes School Board of Trustees members Cadene Russell Brooks, Morgan Hensley, DeShaun Wise Porter, and Simona Wright. And although she could not attend, Councilmember Janeese Lewis-George sent well-wishes.
