It’s time to shine a spotlight on our final “Hidden Figure,” @ewstokespcs Brookland Operations team member Tony Buckhanan, whose positivity, humor, and warm spirit bring daily smiles and joy to the entire school community.

It was an honor to return to my former elementary school, @ewstokespcs to perform a Black History Month Presentation on Go-Go music.

My bandmates and I hosted an interactive call and response and conga lessons and performed for 300+ students and staff at Elsie Whitlow Stokes PCS.

It was great to be back at Stokes and connect with my former music teacher, Mr. Francis Richards, teachers and friends.

I continue to live by Stokes 3 school rules:
I take care of myself.
I take care of others.
I take care of my community. 💪🏽🎶🪘

What would the world look like if we led with love? Catch a glimpse at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Public Charter School (East End Campus @ewstokespcs ), which is seeking caring volunteers to support daytime math and literacy needs!

Come “be the village” as you dedicate at least 1-3 hours once a week to tutoring small groups of K-5th grade students between 8:00am and 3:30pm. You will be supported by dedicated Stokes staff and become a trusted adult in a warm, welcoming school culture.

Volunteers from all backgrounds are needed, especially bilingual English-Spanish or English-French speakers. Volunteers can even start a Spanish or French language club!

The East End Campus is located at 5600 East Capitol St NE, a 10-minute walk from the Capitol Heights metro station on the blue/silver metro line.

Stokes’ Annual Pancake Breakfast is this Saturday, December 13th from 8:30–12:00. Come join us for fluffy, homemade goodness and support our PTA! Tickets are available online and on ParentSquare. $10 for individuals and $25 for a family of 4. If you can get your tickets early, that would be great so we can get an idea of how much pancake batter, etc. we are going to need!

We’re also still looking for volunteer pancake flippers, greeters, servers, and crafters!

Last night’s PTO meeting was one for the books. We had a room full of engaged parents, and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education came to share details about a new study exploring a middle school dual language program East of the River.

Because of the DC Council and because Stokes has been persistent in our advocacy, it made perfect sense that they came to host a listening session with us. Our parents showed up, asked hard and thoughtful questions, and shared real solutions. This is how advocacy and government should work together, with community voice driving community progress.

We know that to retain families in the District and keep them in the public and public charter school system, we must offer programs that attract and inspire. Language immersion is one of those programs. We want the next State Department interpreters, World Bank economic leaders, and Foreign Service professionals to come out of Ward 7 and Ward 8.

If we want public safety to be a priority, we must prioritize high-quality education. We’ve been advocating for this for years, and it’s time to truly invest in our students.

East of the River deserves more than crumbs. It’s time for caviar. Our kids deserve it.

Families stepping up for families at @ewstokespcs

SNAP benefit cuts are set to begin this Saturday, November 1, and families in our school community will be directly impacted. From the start, the PTO committed $1,500 to support affected families. Then we invited parents and staff to contribute and in less than 12 hours, they raised over $1,300 and counting.

This is not just about dollars. It is about being intentional about community. We constantly say we are here to build community and support families any way we can. Today, our community showed exactly what that looks like.

I am so thankful and so proud to be apart of this community. Watch the video to see more.
