The climate crisis and privatised water industry are a bad mix.

Clean, available water is an essential human right.

We need water back in public hands so we can end pollution and invest in making the industry fit to respond to climate breakdown. by @exetergreens

A motion, proposed by Green Party councillor Gill Baker, which aimed to offer discounted brown bins for recycling garden waste to people on low incomes and in receipt of council tax relief has been rejected by councillors. Gill said that such a move would be a "compassionate step towards reducing inequality, supporting environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life for all residents". by @exetergreens

🌈 Exeter Green Party was at Trans Pride this weekend in solidarity with our trans community 💚

🏳️‍⚧️ Trans people face high levels of discrimination and human rights abuses in their daily lives. The recent EHRC guidance will exacerbate these experiences. We must all fight back against discriminatory policies that are harming our community.

🏥 Trans people face unacceptable healthcare access inequality due to a lack of investment in our NHS because of austerity and neoliberal policies. Our NHS has been underfunded by current and previous governments. We all have the right to adequate healthcare and we can achieve this by investing in our NHS.

💰 Trans people are a marginalised group who are scapegoated by a government influenced by those who want to privatise our NHS, want fewer workers’ protection, want the government to have over-reaching power into people's lives and want to own as much of our economy as people. They want everything for one simple goal: profit.

Exeter Young Greens hosted a wonderfully illuminating conversation with local community activists from Exeter Trans Pride, Trans and Non-Binary Cafe, and Transilience.

We discussed how the South West can better support the local trans community, and what we, as individuals and business owners, can do to champion inclusive spaces.

This has been particularly important and relevant in the lead up to the Trans Pride march on Saturday the 3rd.

We hope to host many more such sessions in the future.

Community gardening in Northerhay Gardens this afternoon… Tidying up one of the flower beds.

Shame to see the azalea so overcome by the heat. Roses looking good so gave a bit of a prune and might get another set of blooms before the end of autumn.

We’ve planned two more sessions this autumn get in touch if you’d like to get involved ! Photos of the flower bed we worked on and some of the cuttings that we took to tidy up by @exetergreens

💧Last night Labour refused to support a motion by Green Party councillors calling for a feasibility study into introducing public water stations in Exeter City Centre.

🗣 Green councillor James Banyard gave his reaction:

“First, Labour wanted to stifle debate asking us to withdraw the motion, then they said there wasn’t any time for Council officers to work on this. They then kicked the motion into the long grass by sending it to another committee to discuss. Our motion would have enabled the Council to flush out the practical issues and costs, and get on with it. So, we look forward to seeing the officer’s report!

“Labour tried to sink this motion the very week a new report flags Exeter as one of the cities expected to warm the most in the years ahead. They fail to grasp the need for urgent action on adaptation to climate change.

“Instead Labour are taking a drip drip approach. The idea of public water stations was first raised in a committee in 2023. Three years on, Exeter residents and visitors are getting very thirsty waiting. And there is an urgent need to ensure people sleeping rough have access to fresh water, rather than leaving them to rely on the uncertainty of handouts.

“Where our motion has been successful is in prompting Labour into talking about this issue - we now need action.

“During the meeting, Labour councillors made much of partnerships and collaborative working to deliver water stations in Exeter, but these arrangements remain unclear. However, Green councillors are happy to collaborate on making them a reality across our city.” by @exetergreens
