(Patiently) pulling off the scapulae of @mami.m1lkerz so that I can reach deeper rotators and stabilizers of the shoulder complex. It might look like a lot of waiting and stillness, because it is. It’s totally not in my nature to be this still and patient, which is why I’m grateful that my work teaches me this.
.
.
.
I always joke with myself and others that if I didn’t work on people, I don’t know where I’d be. It’s true, I really don’t know. It’s a test of my patience everyday to be still with what meets me and learn not to fight it; tissues are the best teacher of this. It’s hard to be present. I’m always anticipating future obstacles, tasks and catastrophes. I want to be somewhere else; I fantasize that it’s easier and happier there. Maybe that’s true, but the longer I’m alive, the more I’m shown that you can’t rush these things.

DEAR ONES- it’s been almost a month since my bike accident. I reached my 2 year sober date minus the loads of anesthesia I was under for a nearly 6 hour surgery. It seems there was a lot to do; bones had to be re-broken and my elbow is now reinforced with lots of plates, screws and paste made of cadaver bones. It’s feeling a lot better but it will take me some time to heal and de-Tin Man this thing.
.
.
I’m beyond grateful to my partner, family, friends and sweet clients for helping me through this. Thank you all for your donations, shares, treats and kind words. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.
.
.
I’ll be part of this show on Monday, albeit using one arm. The experiments shall persist.
.
.
Hope to see you soon, I love you.

Back in the fall, @movingmountaininstitute and @kimchristensen.lac encouraged me to book club this and I’m really glad I did. Lan A. Li compiled a really cool collection of images and historical moments that confront the difficulties of anatomical representation and mapping subjective sensation. It centers on East Asian concepts of channels, jingluo, the ā€œwarp and weftā€ of what comprises bodies that actually informed the work of many other traditions of medical theory.
.
It chronicles certain points in history where cultures collided in relationships both fruitful and fraught. Disparate practitioners and scholars who had in some form experienced the phenomenology of referred sensations. These included Dutch and Japanese physicians coexisting in times of unrest while working through their own struggles to map anatomy, Chinese and Soviet researchers seeking to relate dialectical materialism to the human body and the English surgeons who carved their own arms up to find definitive findings of pain responses in the nerves. Nerves, in fact, flummoxed a lot of people for quite a long time.
.
As someone working in a pain trade, it was both fascinating and validating to see all of these attempts to correlate, map and measure come up short; that the mutability of bodies and how we experience sensations and pain means we can’t rely on one method of treatment. We haven’t ā€œsolvedā€ pain, we are merely its custodians.

One year sober, the longest I’ve ever made it.
.
While it’s not the first substance I’ve quit, this was my biggest. Drinking gave me an immense amount of relief. It was easier and more accessible than actual medication and it helped me for a long time, until it didn’t.
.
It’s still hard without it but it’s getting easier. I’m so grateful for everyone in my life, for your patience. I wouldn’t be here without you.
.
šŸ“ø @alenagracediaz - it’s an older picture but it’s still my favorite. Sober or not, I’m a water hag forever.

a rose is a rose is a
.
Like a lot of Reines work, THE ROSE wants to take on the highly visible, the easily commodified and tear into it completely, messily. This collection was born out of love affairs with men at places and times that often didn’t make sense, the people themselves not making sense in theory or on paper and yet an intense all-encompassing transcendent experience transpires. Funny how love is, this book seems to say, or also how serious.
.
Reines doesn’t want to analyze the issues of love as a shortcut to self-acceptance or perhaps even access to power or legitimacy. Instead she wants to hold up an image of an ancient ritual whose origin and practices have been erased out of us for some unknown reason. She seeks to capture moments, glimmers, magnetism as a portal of showing oneself completely albeit briefly. The faithfulness of an attraction in the style of how one would take up an intense interest in an animal to sacrifice; how cruelty enrobed in this kind of enrapture is something closer to love than the rot of repetitious imagery we are served.
.
I’m a big fan of Reines, she is an expert in merging the divine with the mundane. She famously documents conversations with the Sun, mirrors falling on her head and other otherworldly interventions. She’s often taking us on tours through ecstatic states and experiences, yet doesn’t shy away from what happens apart or beside such moments. Uncanny synchronicities against a backdrop of construction sounds or leaf blowers blaring away, the cleaning rituals of junkies, melding souls while smoking crack. She’s got a way of interjecting magic and humanity into all things, that our lives are layered in with all of those around us and with others who have come before; there’s an aliveness, a beating heart among the living and the dead, between rapture and banality, a web connecting all of it can be seen, perhaps, through rose-colored glasses.

Commercial airplane and vehicle assisted photography or ā€œhow many cracks in the earth do I need to capture with my phone?ā€
I couldn’t help myself, I was loving them all.
Finished RIPCORD on the plane, perhaps my favorite 2024 book and feeling like I want to use fewer words too. To get better at using them. I’m feeling a bit empty and cut away and it’s not all bad; just ready to leave things cracked wide open.

Happy New Year, love you.

ā€œI used to look at photos to see the past, but now I don’t need external references. I have my mind dredging up images and stray words I have excised and arranged to form an arc from there to here. That’s one way to create the illusion to go on. I know I’m my own maker and unmaker and that knowledge is all the grace I will ever know. I try to find some still spot in all this tilting. Stop moving, I tell myself—the walker, the tightrope, and the distance to the ground all at once. ā€œ
.
My Dead Book is composed of a series of fragmented memories, some more sparse and others more like living snapshots. Lippens time travels freely, splicing memories of different eras and people who have passed away with acerbic one-liners, lessons learned or from the mouths of said bygone friends.
.
Every story or moment feels cut away with precision and often pain to deliver the essential lesson of life lived in fringe territory; they read like ad hoc koans of an existence assembled on the move, precarious communities mostly held together by tragedy. Each chapter is an emblem of a kind of pessimistic asceticism by a devotee whose only dogma is to embrace the authenticity of one’s life, despite its suffering. To chose life each day only because even s*icide becomes its own cliche in the trial of a queer life in the height of AIDS and in the face of poverty, addiction and grief.
.
Lippens’ precision is an act to gain clarity in the miasma of loss. Moments of connection, love and mutual understanding are brief but potent, life-giving. Characters move in and out, the lines between the living and the dead are blurred as Lippens enters middle-age, enduring the dense fog that lies ahead with the wisdom cut from heartbreak and perseverance. The trick to traveling light, we are shown, is about mastering heaviness.
