The Terminal (2026)
The installation is on view at NowHere in New York through November 7.

.
In The Terminal, a computer works with brute force to break a hidden passcode, rapidly generating hexadecimal codes at random.

.
Trapped between water and a rock suspended overhead, it harbors an irreversible end. The moment it guesses the code, a saw is triggered, the rope is cut, and the rock falls.

.
The odds of success are astronomically low—all but impossible—yet the slight possibility never leaves the space. The hit might come on the next attempt, or never come at all. The viewer hangs between the instant and the eternal, amid unseen tension and the hope of a miracle, at the two ends of time (Terminal).

.
In this exhaustive search, electrical noise is picked up by an antenna placed in the pool of water. This input is mixed into the random-number process, so that the presence of the viewers has a subtle effect on its process. Because the noise is drawn from the surrounding environment, even the viewers who happen to be in the room come to influence, however faintly, the sequence of numbers being generated.

The work is a poetic inquiry into chance and destruction, unfolding inside a circular structure of nature and technology, and at once a reflection on the endless possibility that destruction opens within human imagination. To find a 64-digit hexadecimal passcode is to pick a single atom out of the universe. Should it ever happen, the destruction is also a release: the computer that succeeds is freed from its endless labor (an end that is both death and rescue) and transforms from a mass-produced commodity into a non-fungible object. Only by breaking does it become a single, irreplaceable thing. In this age of AI, where computers have come to be spoken of as if human, the work stands as a fable about the relation between the machine and what is not the machine. by @exonemo

Hatch/et (2026)

Hatch/et is an apparatus that endlessly brute-forces randomly generated passcodes, and at the moment it succeeds, brings a hatchet down on itself. A computer, manufactured as one fungible unit among many, meets a code that belongs to it alone and is thereby promoted into something irreplaceable. The cost of that promotion is to cut itself down. Individuation and erasure converge on the same instant.

Now on view at NowHere in New York until November 7.

The Last Acres of the Internet (2026)

In today's internet, parsed out and developed down to the last corner, we have found one last untouched paradise: a domain name made of a meaningless, random string, 63 characters long. On that domain, we have built a vast wilderness of HTML made from random clusters of characters.

The wilderness HTML is a piece of "Unicode art" generated using the domain name as its seed. Within it, characters of many kinds, drawn at random from Unicode, cluster together to form patterns like natural terrain. Among them are many square glyphs known as "tofu," marking spots where no character has yet been assigned. Every year, the Unicode Consortium adds anywhere from a few hundred to more than ten thousand new characters to these unassigned spots. Which means the wilderness HTML keeps changing its face, as characters gradually settle into the tofu over time. It keeps shifting, the way weeds grow over a plot of land left untended.

@Exonemo, a long-time digital art duo, were briefly our studio neighbors in Dumbo! Their recent series of generative ASCII art landscapes, "Last Acres of The Internet", are delivered on a discrete domain. Really love this concept – already 1 bid on eBay!

Description:
The Last Acres of the Internet was developed to mark exonemo's 30th anniversary, as a tribute to the net.art pioneers who once broke ground on unclaimed land. As the internet became embedded in society, short, memorable domain names rose in value like land in Manhattan. This project sells domain names made of meaningless, random strings of 63 characters, the maximum length allowed for a second-level domain, as "the Last Acres of the Internet." On this last land spreads an HTML wilderness, a piece of "Unicode art" by exonemo, built from random strings. Buyers gain ownership of the domain name along with this wilderness, and can develop it into a dreamland of their own making. In tribute to the net.art pioneers who once opened up the internet as an untamed wilderness, the project proposes a flight to this farthest edge, away from an internet that has today been developed down to the last corner.

DISCODER (1999 - 2000)
*Restored by ZKM

The browser-based software artwork DISCODER, created in 1999 and 2000 (Installation version) as a browser-based tool for creatively destroying web pages, has been restored with the cooperation of ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The original modified keyboard has been recreated by ZKM engineers based on records from that time. For the hardware restoration, we decided to leave the entire process in the hands of ZKM’s engineers—after all, once we’re gone, we can’t do it ourselves!

Now on display at

Callback (2022)

Callback is an installation based on the prescient science-fiction Japanese manga “My Name is Shingo” (Watashi wa shingo) by Kazuo Umezu, that he created during the 1980s, before the spread of the Internet or AI.
Created today, approximately forty years after the original, the idea for this work sprang from the artists imagining what it would be like if Shingo’s thoughts had lived on within the network.
