Back from Bolivia and starting my series with an impression of the so called „Valle de las Animas“ which is being translated as „Valley of the Souls“. The myth says, whispering souls are appearing when the wind blows through the stalagmites. Witnessing this rare terrain covered in fog, somehow made me understand why 🇧🇴 @visitsouthamerica.co @experiencebolivia

✨ un-BOLIVIA-ble moments ✨ with our buddy @braybraywoowoo who did this tour with us a few years back!

Bolivia is BY FAR one of my all time favourite countries. It’s unique landscapes made my jaw drop literally every time we turned a corner during our travels there.

Here are some of my favourite photos from the trip!

1. Geysers and rainbow mountains on the way to the salt flats.

2. The razor sharp rock formations of Valle de las Animas AKA The Valley of the Souls.

3. A bridge in the middle of Valle de la Luna, The Valley of the Moon. Can you spot the pan flute player in the distance? I didn’t even photoshop him in. 👀

4. First light underneath the towering Huayna Potosi.

5. Driving across the largest mirror on Planet Earth out in the middle of Salar de Uyuni.

6 & 7. Some furry little friends I made in the high desert. 🦊🦙

8 & 9. My favourite forces perspective shots from the dry part of the salt flats. 😂😂😂

10. A BTS clip of Rod looking ridiculous while trying to do a forced perspective photo of himself fighting a dinosaur. 😂💀🦖

For the first time in more than a century, scientists have named a brand-new species of wild cat — and it lives in Bolivia.

Meet the tilcayo (Leopardus tilcayo), announced today in the journal Current Biology. It lives in the Yungas, Bolivia’s misty cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes, where the mountains meet the Amazon — one of the least-studied and most biodiverse places on Earth. It’s tiny: about 46 centimeters long and just 1.4 kilos, smaller than a house cat, with soft light-brown fur marked by irregular rosettes.

But the best part is how it was found. In 2016, Bolivian biologist and National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz was called to a wildlife sanctuary to see a “weird cat” — one a local family had kept, thinking it was a housecat. She was fascinated, took a hundred photos, but assumed it was a tiger cat species already known to science. Three years later, looking back through those photos, she noticed the rosettes on its coat were far too big to match. That single detail set her on a genetic investigation that revealed a lineage which split from other cats around 1.4 million years ago — a species no one had ever described.

The team named it “tilcayo,” the word local communities already used, honoring their ancestral knowledge of the animal. And Nogales-Ascarrunz is now setting camera traps across the Yungas to find it in the wild.

It’s a reminder that South America still holds secrets — whole species hiding in its forests, waiting for someone to look closely enough.

Traveling to Uyuni or the Atacama soon? Here’s what you need to know.

A winter storm has hit the Bolivian altiplano hard, bringing heavy snow and blocking roads across the Uyuni region. As of today, August 20, 2026, the Hito Cajón border crossing between Bolivia and Chile is closed, and some Uyuni–Atacama tours are rerouting through Ollagüe where possible.

If you have a trip in the next several days: check your route and border status directly with your tour operator before you set out, build in buffer time, and pack for extreme cold. Conditions at these altitudes are no joke right now.

This same storm has been devastating for the altiplano’s herding communities, freezing pastureland and cutting off families across Potosí. Our thoughts are with them.

If your travel plans are affected and you need a hand navigating it, our team is here to help — reach us on WhatsApp at +1 949 299 8915.

⚠️ Conditions are changing daily. This reflects the situation as of August 20, 2026 — always confirm the latest with your operator or local authorities.

It looks like an empanada. It’s actually a bowl of soup you can hold in one hand.

Meet the salteña, Bolivia’s beloved mid-morning ritual. Under a slightly sweet, sturdy crust hides the jigote — a rich stew of meat, potatoes, peas, olives, and egg, swimming in broth. The secret is gelatin: it sets the filling solid in the fridge, then melts back into hot soup in the oven, so every salteña is baked around a hidden pocket of liquid.

The name comes from “the woman from Salta,” an Argentine exile named Juana Manuela Gorriti who, as legend has it, sold broth empanadas in Bolivia to survive. The dish found its true form in the freezing mining city of Potosí, high in the Andes, where a warm pastry full of soup made all the sense in the world.

There’s even a right way to eat one: hold it upright, nibble a top corner, sip the broth first, add a spoon of fiery llajua, and work your way down without spilling a drop. Do it in the morning — salteñerías sell out by noon, and Bolivians are devoted enough that, as one writer joked, not even a coup will interrupt a salteña feast.
