New public parkland is coming to the Texas Hill Country west of Austin.

MILTON REIMERS RANCH PARK
— Largest park in Travis County, about 2,400 acres
— About 3 miles of Pedernales River frontage, nearly 300 climbing routes, 18 miles of bike trails
— International Dark Sky Park, open now for day use

CASTLETOP
— 475 acres, sold by the Topfer family for $40M ($5M under appraisal)
— Was slated for 950 homes
— Becomes part of Reimers, bringing it to about 2,900 acres

RGK RANCH
— 1,507 acres east of Reimers, sold by the Kozmetsky/Scott family for $90M
— The family turned down offers over $130M, the largest land value donation in county history
— Was slated for 1,500 homes, park is not yet open

PROPOSED AMENITIES
— Camping, hiking and bike trails, river and fishing access, night-sky programs, scenic overlooks, a visitor center, an adventure course, equine facilities, and a nature and science center
— Long-term goal: connecting Reimers and RGK

TIMELINE
— Public feedback through Nov 4
— Final vision plan and funding in early 2027
— Completion in about 2 to 5 years, roughly 2028 to 2032

Located in the Texas Hill Country along the Medina River

Bandera, TX is known as The Cowboy Capital of the World

With less than 1,000 residents, it once was the primary staging area of the Great Western Trail from 1874-1894

30,000+ cowboys drove upwards of 10 Million Longhorns up north to Kansas & Nebraska (and sometimes the Dakotas & Canada)

Where ranchers and cowboys could buy cattle for $3-$4 in Texas, then flip them for $30-$40 up north

It’s estimated that over the 20 years, $200 Million was generated in revenue, which would be $6.5 Billion today

Some cool attractions and historical sites in the town:
— Mansfield Park, hosting rodeos since 1924
— Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar, the oldest continuously operating honk-tonk in the state

On South Padre Island Beach, if you drive as far north as possible on State Park Road 100. It abruptly ends on the beach, coordinates:

📍(26.2464910, -97.1863222)

From the end of the road, it’s about 25 miles of remote tropical coastline until you get to the Mansfield Cut which is a Jetty separating it from North Padre Island

Aoudads (aka Barbary sheep) are sometimes spotted along rocky canyons and terrain across the Texas Hill Country

I was blessed to run into small pack of them near the Tinaja Rock Bowl at Colorado Bend State Park

Before I could get any closer or get more videos, they ran off. And was not expecting to see them

They are invasive from Northern Africa, and are often exotic pets on ranches. Which has now spread to them roaming around Central Texas

Texas Parks and Wildlife will sometimes allow public draw hunts to manage the population

This is a portal to the European Gothic Revival Era

@festivalhill.institute is located right outside of Round Top, Texas

📍248 Jaster Rd

For a town that’s only 1 square mile, and less than 100 residents, and gets majority of their tourism from the Antique Show (150k visitors per show)

There’s about 18 buildings across the 210 acre music & arts campus

Founded in 1971 by James Dick, they now get about 35k annual visitors

I spoke with managing director, Lamar Lentz who’s been with them for 50 years

The Edythe Bates Old Chapel is home to the oldest organ in the state. And was taken apart board-by-board in Lagrange, Texas then reassembled in Round Top

the crown jewel is their Concert Hall, a marvel of craftsmanship and acoustics. Capacity of 1,000 guests, everything was built by hand. They have 10,000 square cut diamonds.

Gorman Falls at Colorado Bend State Park is one of the tallest (~70 Feet) waterfalls in Texas.

And the only one to actually grow each year. This is because it doesn’t erode, and actually has new mineral layers build up from calcium carbonate dissolving in the spring water.

Fed by underground springs, this flows year round and doesn’t rely on rainwater taken in Colorado Bend State Park by @explore.tex
