the Cheam Range traverse - a long time coming! 11:56 elapsed from the summit of Cheam to the summit of Foley, tagging all 8 peaks in the range. well before I moved to Chilliwack, this range had always held a sort of mystery to me. while Cheam is a popular day hike, the rest of the range is still largely quiet, and few had ever linked up large portions of the range, let alone the entire thing. in recent years there have been a handful of successful link-ups of the whole range, but always as multi-day affairs. after a lot of scouting and a failed attempt last year, @jpmdierckx and I lucked out with weather & conditions and finally put it all together this past weekend, going end-to-end in just under 12 hrs, with a C2C time of 16.5 hrs or so. the time is mostly irrelevant other than just being stoked to move fast through big terrain… such an incredible feeling. the full traverse is a big, committing line with complicated route-finding and a lot of technical, exposed terrain. I’d love to see it get done more often, but it’s definitely recommended to spend a bunch of time scouting it as while the peaks are often technical, the linkage between summits is even more convoluted at times. this felt like the culmination of many years of gradual progresion in both fitness & mountain travel, and the Cheam range is certainly worthy of more attention as it packs a lot of excitement into a relatively small footprint. taken in Cheam Range by @exploromann

Jonathan Büchner… my main climbing partner, and my best friend. On May 31st, Jon and two other experienced climbers disappeared during their descent off Atwell Peak in the Coast Mountains. A lengthy SAR operation was unable to find any signs of the boys. At this point, it is presumed they were swept off the face by a sudden avalanche - but impossible to say for certain. Search will continue over the coming weeks as the snow melts. // Friends go grab drinks on a Friday night, but brothers tie into climbing ropes together. “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” - C.S. Lewis Jon was the best of the best. He moved through the mountains like most walk through their house. I always felt a bit like the younger brother, trying desperately to keep up but always falling a bit short. But Jon was far more than just an athlete… he had the deepest appreciation for beauty I’ve seen in a human being. He didn’t just take photos… he created art that reflected the beauty that he saw in God’s creation. That beauty he saw wasn’t limited to the mountains - it was how he saw people, too. Jon took more joy in being able to introduce others to the mountains than he did in his own bucket list climbs. He was more talented and capable than most could dream of, but he spoke and treated others with a gentleness that still amazes me today. continued ⬇️ by @exploromann

the great expanse | joffre peak, 2721m. this photo was the first shot i’ve ever licensed commercially (thanks @vsco 😌) and it was also the culmination of many months of scouting, careful weather monitoring, failed attempts, and sleepless nights. i made two unsuccessful tries at joffre peak via the aussie couloir, and on my third try @seb_gulka and i finally hit the summit after a 2am departure from the trailhead in -30° temps. long story short… a photo doesn’t always tell the whole story. the summit is euphoric and life-changing, but it doesn’t come without the willingness to put your body and mind on the line in pretty substantial ways. (this objective involves traversing significant avalanche terrain and sustained glacier travel… don’t venture into the backcountry without experience in these areas.) taken in Joffre Peak by @exploromann

The list: Something that might take nearly 24hrs Link up some big summits And complete all travel around them by human power We left at midnight on friday (11:59pm so the night would in fact belong to friday but don’t get me started). 40km by bike to Flora up/down Flora by 6am Biked to MacFarlane 20km up/down Macfarlane (don’t ask me the time i don’t remember) Biked to new borden FSR and went up McGuire by foot from the river valley and back down Biked another 20km back home sometime before dark. 140km covered 5700m gained and lost and about 19.5 great hours with friends in the River Valley!
