Insurance usually won't pay for a preventative check-in; they only pay once a problem is diagnosed. This forces therapists into unethical labeling. At Eye In Me, we operate outside that system. Your peace shouldn't depend on a policy loophole. by @eyeinme

Today’s the day.

We’re bringing The Conversation We Put Off: Talking Grief & Estate Planning into the room.

Because planning for death is never just about paperwork.

It’s about family.
Control.
Fear.
Grief.
Legacy.

And the decisions we keep putting off because we’re not sure how to start the conversation.

That’s what we’re talking about today.

If you’ve been meaning to register, you still have time to join us. https://theconvoweputoff.eventbrite.com/

Come be part of the conversation.

Until next time...

Estate planning doesn’t create family conflict. It can reveal what was already there.

That’s part of why these conversations get avoided.

Talking about a will means talking about money, responsibility, fairness, mortality, and what happens after someone is gone. For a lot of families, that can feel like opening a door nobody knows how to close.

But avoiding the conversation doesn’t make the tension disappear.

Sometimes it just stays under the surface until a crisis brings it out — when people are already grieving, overwhelmed, and trying to make decisions at the same time.

That’s exactly why we’re having The Conversation We Put Off: Talking Grief & Estate Planning on October 3.

We’re talking about the part of estate planning that doesn’t always make it into the paperwork:

The fear.
The family dynamics.
The conflict.
The grief.
And the conversations that need to happen before a crisis forces them.

You do not have to leave this event with your entire estate plan finished.

That's not the point.

Maybe your first step is asking your parent whether they have a will.

Maybe it's telling your partner what you would want if you couldn't make a medical decision for yourself.

Maybe it's finally scheduling the appointment you've been putting off.

Or maybe the first step is simply admitting that this conversation makes you uncomfortable.

The goal isn't to do everything at once. It's to make the conversation possible.

That's why one of the final questions we'll ask our panel on October 3 is simple:

If you did one thing after leaving this room, what should it be?

Come hear their answers.

Not making a plan is still a decision.

If you die without an estate plan, the questions don't disappear.

Who receives what?

Who has authority?

Who is protected?

Who isn't?

There are legal rules that step in when you haven't made those decisions yourself.

And that becomes especially important when the life you've built doesn't fit neatly into a traditional family structure — a long-term partner, chosen family, a business, or people you love who may not automatically be protected by the law.

This is one of the conversations we'll be having on October 3 during The Conversation We Put Off: Talking Grief & Estate Planning.

Not to scare people into planning.

To help us understand what we're actually leaving undecided when we keep saying, “I'll get to it.”

You wouldn’t run your car for 30,000 miles without an oil change, yet you expect your mind to run on empty for years. Prevention is cheaper than repair. The annual mental health check-in is your high-performance tune-up to ensure you don't stall out when it matters most. by @eyeinme

Your therapist should be part of your starting 5.

I’m using a basketball reference here. Your starting 5 is the group of players on the court who are there to help you play the game.

I think your therapist can be part of that same kind of support system in your life.

Your clergy may have one perspective.

Your financial planner has another.

Your attorney has another.

Your family has another.

Your therapist brings another lens — one grounded in understanding people, relationships, patterns, and behavior.

That relationship might look different depending on what you need. Weekly therapy. Monthly check-ins. An occasional conversation when something comes up.

The point is having someone who can help you see what you may not be able to see from where you're standing.

Your therapist doesn't replace your community. They're part of it.
Until next time...

What are we really putting off when we avoid planning for death?

It can look like procrastination.

But sometimes what we're avoiding isn't the paperwork. It's what the paperwork asks us to confront.

Our mortality.
Our relationships.
Who we trust.
What happens to the people we love when we're no longer here to make the decisions.

That's why estate planning can't only be a legal conversation.

On October 3, we're bringing the emotional, legal, and end-of-life perspectives into the same room for The Conversation We Put Off: Talking Grief & Estate Planning.

Kevin Carter, LCSW-C will bring the grief perspective. Michen M. Tah, Esq. will bring the legal perspective. Jocelyn Route will bring the end-of-life perspective. And I’ll be bringing the mental health perspective: why these conversations can be so difficult to have in the first place.

The legal plan matters. So does the emotional work it takes to make one.

Swipe for the conversation we're having—and the details to join us.

I call grief an active technology.

We know we're going to experience loss.

We know we're going to experience change. We know death is part of life.

The question is: how do we engage with grief when it comes?

For me, that means developing more grief literacy — having the language, practices, and awareness to recognize that grief is something we live with and can learn to engage with.

Especially in our communities, I think there's value in becoming more conscious about what grief is asking of us.

Not just how to survive it.

But how to work with it.

You get an annual eye exam to ensure your vision is clear. When was the last time you checked your perspective? Stress has a way of blurring our boundaries and our goals. The annual mental health check-in provides clinical clarity before things get out of focus. by @eyeinme

We often expect grief to follow a neat timeline, but healing is cyclical. Having a difficult day weeks or months after a loss does not mean you are moving backward. It simply means you are processing a new layer of the experience. #GriefTherapy #EyeInMe #BlackMentalHealthMatters by @eyeinme
