Today, I pause. Not just to celebrate another birthday, but to appreciate the journey that brought me here. I’m grateful for the person I’ve become, the lessons that shaped me, the people I’ve been privileged to learn from, and the opportunities to lead, learn, create and serve.

I’ve come to understand that success isn’t just about what you achieve for yourself. It is also about the problems you solve, the people you impact, the lives you make a little easier, and the value you leave behind.

As a lawyer, entrepreneur, and creative-business enthusiast, I’m still building, still learning, still figuring things out, and chasing the bigger picture. There have been wins worth celebrating. There have also been seasons that demanded grit, patience and faith, and through it all, I’m grateful. I’m proud of the growth, but I’m even more excited about lies ahead.

The next version of me has bigger dreams, deeper wisdom, greater capacity and, hopefully, a much greater impact. So here’s to another year of purpose, growth, impact, excellence and becoming. 🥂

Happy birthday Okoi Edward Onen, first of his kind. 😌 by @eyeofthelaw_

A performer may not automatically own copyright, but a performer CAN own copyright.

In my last video, I explained why simply performing a song does not automatically make you the copyright owner. But there’s an important clarification: A performer can actually own copyright in a musical work where they are also the author/creator, or where the relevant rights have been validly transferred or assigned to them. So, for example, if an artist writes and performs their own song, the fact that they are the performer does not prevent them from being the copyright owner.

The key is to understand what role the person played in creating the work and what rights they legally hold. That is why music rights go beyond asking Who sang the song, you need to ask Who wrote it? Who owns the composition? Who owns the sound recording? What rights were transferred or licensed? And what rights does the performer actually have?

Music rights can be complicated. Understanding them shouldn’t be.

Did you catch Part 1? Go back and watch it, then tell me whether a performer own copyright.

YES, you performed a song, BUT you may not own it.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the music industry is that being the performer automatically makes you the copyright owner.

There is a lot more to understanding music rights than simply asking, “Who sang the song?”

Aside all I've said which is the LAW, do you think a performer should automatically own copyright in the song they perform? Let’s talk about it. by @eyeofthelaw_

"The commercial objective of a recording agreement is the exploitation of recordings. A label cannot keep an artist's music on the shelf indefinitely while insisting the artist remains bound by exclusivity."

That was the central argument I advanced as Counsel for the Plaintiff (Artist) during an Entertainment Law Moot organised by the @cbaforafrica 2026 cohort, through the leadership of @sojafilmx

The dispute raised an important question for the music industry: Can a record label delay the release of a completed album for an extended period and still enforce an exclusive recording agreement against the artist?

While the judgment ultimately favoured the record label, the experience was a reminder that advocacy is about more than winning. It's about developing legal arguments that shape how we think about contracts, copyright, commercial exploitation, and the relationship between artists and labels.

One lesson from the judgment will stay with me: it is not enough to argue that the other party breached first. The stronger case is built by demonstrating how that breach undermined the commercial purpose of the entire agreement.

As an entertainment lawyer, I enjoy exploring the intersection of law, business, and creativity. Every contract tells a story, every dispute teaches a lesson, and every advocacy experience sharpens the ability to better protect creatives and businesses alike.

Grateful to the organisers, the Judge @mandyuzoagba, opposing counsel @love.c.obunike , and everyone who participated in making the exercise intellectually rewarding.

The learning continues, the advocacy continues, and the mission remains the same: helping build a stronger legal framework for Africa's creative economy.

Yours truly O. E. Onen, Esq 😁

For the past three days, I had the privilege of sitting with some of the brightest minds shaping Africa's music industry at the Africa Music Business Roundtable (AMBR) Season 2.

It was more than an industry event, it brought together policymakers, regulators, lawyers, executives, tech leaders, investors, and creatives around one question: how do we ensure Africa not only creates culture, but also captures its value?

A few conversations stood out: Nigeria is estimated to have over $286 million in untapped creative value; many songs are still released without proper metadata, making ownership and royalty collection difficult; and issues like AI, copyright, stream farming (causes and effects), and a National Intellectual Property Registry that could reshape the industry. One idea that especially resonated with me was treating intellectual property as a bankable asset, so creatives can use their catalogues and copyrights to access finance.

As an Entertainment Lawyer, this reaffirmed my belief that the future of African music is not just about bigger records, but stronger structures. Afrobeats has won global attention. Now the focus must be ownership, transparency, governance, and sustainable monetisation.

On my part, my contributions were centered around "stream farming", more specifically - its PR and marketing relevance and its effect on Music Catalogue Evaluation, and injury on its long term value.

Thank you to @amb_roundtable, @musictechnigeria Nigeria, and everyone who made these conversations possible. Most grateful to my Leader @michaelodiong.

What change do you think the African music industry needs most right now? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
