Juneteenth is more than a celebration—it is a reminder that freedom, equality, and justice have always required action.

As we commemorate June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, we also honor the generations who continued the fight for civil rights long after slavery ended.

As a physician, I am mindful that access to healthcare was once legally segregated in America. Progress came not only through laws, but through the courage of advocates, community leaders, healthcare professionals, and ordinary citizens who demanded that our nation live up to its ideals.

Today, we celebrate freedom, recognize the sacrifices of those who came before us, and recommit ourselves to building healthier, stronger, and more equitable communities for all.

May we never forget that history is not only something we remember—it is something we continue to shape.

Happy Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, freedom was finally enforced in Texas when Union troops arrived in Galveston and General Order No. 3 announced the end of slavery for more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom was not simply declared—it had to be enforced, protected, and continually fought for. We honor the resilience, courage, and determination of those who endured slavery and those who helped secure freedom for future generations.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we reflect on the ongoing journey toward liberty, justice, and equality for all.

Konnichiwa Friends! I am Still celebrating and still grateful 🌸

My 50th birthday season continues, and now it’s time to give back through Give.Love.Xavier Days (April 7–10). Supporting Xavier has been a part of my journey, and I’m inviting you to join me.

So many students are just a small gap away from finishing their degrees—and we can help close it.

Even while traveling in Japan, I’m reminded of wabi-sabi—the beauty in each season of life. This is a season of giving, growth, and impact.

If you feel led, you can support here:

With gratitude and Xavier pride 🌸
