The clothes promise to tell you who you are. The mirror shows you what’s left.Fade Out Label’s installation You Are What You Wear turns the fashion industry back on itself: a critique of consumerism that manages to be cruel and funny in the same gesture. Built from reflection and mirrored images, the work is literal and physical as an object, abstract and surreal as an image: on one side the living body, on the other the dead shell it wears. It leaves you to decide which one you walked in as.Consumption is the softest anaesthetic of all. #fashionshow Ladies & Genders, FADE OUT Label presents: “Impressions d’Afrique”This fashion show is inspired by one of my favorite books, Impressions d’Afrique, published in 1910 by the French writer Raymond Roussel.A dandy and eccentric visionary, Roussel is considered one of the spiritual fathers of Pataphysics, the “science of imaginary solutions.” His novel was written according to a highly original compositional method based on homophonic wordplay, phonetic distortions, and the semantic duplication of language. Through this process, he created vivid images with words as if constructing a giant rebus. Roussel kept this creative technique secret throughout his life, revealing it only in a posthumously published text.FADE OUT Label adopts a similar approach in its own creative process. Through upcycling and patchwork techniques, discarded materials are transformed into new and unexpected garments. What both the fashion industry and consumers once considered waste is elevated to the status of “denim couture,” brought onto the runway and given a new value and meaning.The collection features hand screen-printed organic cotton, deadstock fabrics, the label’s signature recycled tote bags and upcycling jeans , and, for the first time, contemporary batik-inspired textiles influenced by African traditions. These original prints were created by artist @studiosuperfluo_ .The collection consists of unique and new pieces mixed with garments recreated “ex novo” from the brand’s “Permanent Collection.”The FADE OUT Label’s show aims to encourage reflection and greater awareness of the fashion industry—one of the world’s most polluting industries.
