They say that time flies when you’re having fun. This day cruised by at the speed of light! 💫

It was all beautifully stage-managed by the brilliant Ariella Roberts and Erika Escoto of the Disney Synergy team. And exquisitely executed by Cameron Covell and Brian Sung from the ABC Localish team. With support from the phenomenal Nat Geo team: Jen Driscoll, Melissa McKeon, Lindsey Sandifer, Kacey Zwier & Cecily Casas (and everyone else behind-the-scenes!)

And of course NONE of it would have been possible without the incredible cast and crew of The Lion King on Broadway allowing me to hang out with them. They were generous with their time and hearts - even as they prepped for a show that evening (which was incredible! 🤩)

Extra special thanks to my Make Up guru: Jill Harth. Not sure how she convinced me to go for those lashes, but I absolutely loved rocking them.

It took a village to pull this day off. I’ve got a massive backlog of BTS to post, but I hope to get to this one soon!

In the meantime, please show some love to the video we made on @natgeotv Insta and also on YouTube: From Savannah to Broadway!

Also, if you haven’t yet: check out #NatGeoLION on Disney+ and Hulu! If you have neither of those, you can watch LION Chapter 1 on YouTube. And also definitely check out The Lion King on Broadway (and on tour!) taken in New York Times Square by @faimus_

Imagine running a livestream show from the middle of the wild.

Faith Musembi takes us back to 2017 and explains how SafariLive now known as @wildearthofficial was produced. From monitoring multiple camera feeds in the control room to coordinating with camera teams across different parks and reserves, every moment required serious teamwork.

The behind the scenes of wildlife livestreaming is just as fascinating as what you see on screen. 🌍

If you’d told me that I’d be getting an impromptu dance lesson on Broadway, while at the same time inviting people to watch LION, I’d have called you crazy. Insane, even.

But here we are. 🥰

Watch my full hang out with Nala and Simba (as well as some of the amazing crew) from Lion King on Broadway - out on YouTube now!

BTS of that incredible day is on a slow roast in the kitchen.

What if extraterrestrials looked and sounded just like us? 👀🇰🇪

In 2019, Kenyan filmmaker Faith Musembi wrote and directed Chuma — a sci-fi short film about an extraterrestrial species living peacefully in Kenya, while the government sees them as a threat and wants them eliminated.

In this episode of the Game Drive Pod, Faith takes us back to the making of Chuma, her early filmmaking journey, and what it was like bringing a Kenyan sci-fi story to life.

One of the lionesses who moved me particularly deeply in the Topi Pride is Dunia. She is one of Summer’s daughters, which makes her Kio’s big sister.

The first thing you notice about Dunia is her limp, which made her instantly recognisable in the pride. At a time when we were trying to learn the identities of more than 20 different lions, her limp was incredibly helpful.

But what made her really quite remarkable was that she was one of the Topi Pride’s fiercest hunters. An outstanding sequence that didn’t make it into the series (filmed by @tania.escobar.ori) is of Dunia hunting a zebra all 👏🏾 by 👏🏾 her 👏🏾 self!

If you’ve spent any time in the bush, you’ll know just how difficult zebra are to hunt - even when the lionesses are working together. Dunia made quick work of it solo. (I think we were more concerned about her limp than she was!)

At one point during filming, though, her limp became noticeably worse. We worried that she had a new injury so we shared our concerns with the Musiara Gate Warden, who organised a medical examination with the KWS vet team.

After a thorough examination, they found that it was an old injury that had healed poorly and would occasionally be aggravated by hunting. Treating it would have meant taking her away for an extended period of time, which wasn’t an option because she had cubs at the time. And because the injury wasn’t affecting her quality of life, the vets made a note of it and left her in peace.

PIC #1: We typically don’t come into contact with the animals we film. But this was one of those rare instances when we could. This was just after she’d been examined. I found myself wanting to touch her to somehow communicate to her how much we love her and how deeply we were all rooting for her.

PIC #2: Dunia scanning the horizon, with her littles next to her. Next to her on his back is also one of her older sons, Nzuri (also known as the most handsome male lion in the world because of his curly mane.) We were surprised that Dunia tolerated Nzuri being that close - even though he’s their brother. But she ran a tight ship. And Nzuri knew it, so there were no shenanigans.

This is a fairly standard morning on location - especially when the boys got older. We’d sometimes find them scattered around in the morning, and thus would begin our never ending game of hide-and-seek.

This is also why it was critical that we learn to ID them. By recognizing that we were with Ukingo and Nzuri, we knew that we still had to track down Kiongozi.

A slice of life from the morning of an actual shoot on LION, before wheels up. This one in particular was a cross shoot between the GSS (with cinematographer @markmacewen_dop ) and the drone (piloted by @tonynjugz of @routesadventure.) The GSS pickup truck was commandeered by none other than the legendary @sammywmunene.

A cross shoot means that both the GSS and drone are filming the same behaviour from different angles.

In the field, the team was supported by our Governors spotter guide @kirokormika and Ranger @ezekielparsaloigmail.com4.

Ezekiel’s presence was to make sure that we were keeping a respectful distance from the wildlife, and also to ensure we were safe because both GSS and drone required us to exit the vehicles to handle the filming equipment.

Who can tell me which bird is trying to chime in the conversation in the background? 🐦

Had a really lovely conversation with Dr. Angie Adkin on the @allcreaturespodcast. We spoke about LION - and covered a wide range of topics. Including if we (as wildlife filmmakers) intervene when the wildlife need it. You can watch the full podcast on the All Creatures Podcast on YouTube.

In many ways, being a wildlife filmmaker is a dream job. But on days like this, I question how dreamy it is.

These are termites that had emerged from the ground after a downpour. We found them waiting for us when we arrived back at camp after a long day of filming Kio and the pride.

No insect repellent will help you out here. And I kept feeling phantom insects crawling all over me long after I’d escaped them.
