What an honour to have our film @natureaintaluxury have its industry Premiere at @wildscreenorg last night!

5 years of each of us taking it in turns to hold the belief we’d get to this point one day. 🥲But to do it at the best wildlife film festival in the world… man. It was wild to watch people watch it for the first time; and to get such an incredible response and applause from the best of the best in the industry is truly humbling, and to be nominated for a Panda award.

I could not have done it without each and every one of my team and with the unbending passion and support of the @thewildlifetrusts as well as @thedocsociety & ECF too

The film explores why so many young people, particularly from black, brown and lower economic communities have been historically and continually alienated from nature. An (often hilarious) adventure takes us from swimming with seals to getting lost on the moors, it is rooted in black joy, humour and the very real challenges to accessing the land because Nature ain’t a luxury, it’s a necessity!

We are absolutely thrilled to introduce the inaugural cohort of the Nuru Storytelling Bootcamp! 🎉🎬

On October 31st, these storytellers will come together in Nairobi for a week of learning, collaboration and creativity. They’ll be guided by industry professionals as they join forces to bring three original short films to life.

And on November 6th, they’ll have the joy of sharing their films with an audience in Nairobi! And you’re all invited! 🎟️ More details on the screening to come soon.

This is a very (very!) special milestone for Nuru, and we’re really looking forward to the stories, friendships and creative collaborations that will emerge from this first gathering.

This year, I was invited to represent Getaway magazine on National Geographic Journeys with G Adventuresʼ Kenya Safari Experience. It was bucket-list stuff: I witnessed a Masai giraffe giving birth and observed social interactions among the Rongai Pride of lions on the Olkiombo side of the Masai Mara. I went on a walking safari overlooking Lake Naivasha within the Great Rift Valley with Naturalist Aden Bonaya, met field representative Robert from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), who offered a nuanced perspective on human-wildlife conflict, and visited Cafe Ubuntu in the town of Maai Mahiu, which offers jobs to marginalised women and supports the Ubuntu School. G Adventuresʼ Ripple ScoreTM indicates the percentage of traveller money spent with locally owned businesses, and our Journey scored an impressive 100!

Even better, I travelled with Faith Musembi, the field director and producer of Lion from the BBC Studios Natural History Unit for National Geographic. During our long drives in Land Cruisers from place to place, or while we waited for elephants to appear, I pulled out my dictaphone and asked her about her life. Her parents told her bedtime stories about their experiences growing up in Loitokitok, Kenya. It must’ve ignited something in her: she became the first Black Kenyan woman to produce and direct a premium natural history film. She founded the Nuru Film Institute, a Masai Mara-based training hub building pathways for African wildlife and conservation storytellers.

Our livestream fundraiser for @savetheelephants raised over $30k!! Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who tuned in and donated to help rebuild the camp to be flood-proof and bat-free (in the toilets — they’ll be safely relocated to non-toilet living). Your support means providing STE researchers and staff with functional and safe living conditions, allowing them to continue protecting elephants across Kenya and beyond!

Preparing for this livestream in the remote Samburu National Reserve was hectic, to say the least. It was a project none of us had ever taken on before. A huge thank you to my immensely talented friend @faimus_ for all of her help!! Thanks to her, we had necessary equipment flown in, quick cuts to fun clips to make the stream more dynamic, and a level of organization we otherwise wouldn’t have had.

Huge shoutout to @paul_k_leajore for following us around with a starlink balancing on his head for 90 minutes so our connection wouldn’t time out, @meha.kumar_ for her impressive cinematography, @puritymilgo for being a fantastic co-host and teaching everyone about the camp, and @daviddaballen for all of his knowledge. And of course, @janewynyard for putting this project all together!

And last but not least, a big thank you to everyone at STE who was helping behind the scenes. The success of this project is a testament to your unbelievable teamwork that monitors and protects elephants every day. Thank you for trusting me to execute this. So so so much love. 🤍

Faith Musembi takes us back to 2017 and explains how SafariLive now known as @wildearthofficial was produced. From monitoring multiple camera feeds in the control room to coordinating with camera teams across different parks and reserves, every moment required serious teamwork.

The behind the scenes of wildlife livestreaming is just as fascinating as what you see on screen. 🌍
