Today is International Craft Day - a day of mixed feelings in many ways. I feel so hopeful for our sector - Australia's wealth of talent and recognition globally. Craft keeps growing stronger in fresh ways with initiatives like @loewefoundation Craft Prize and @homofaber - so so good this year! But then I'm dismayed that were are still fighting so hard to keep craft visible and viable in its own right, especially with reduced craft eduction, the recent closure of @australiandesigncentre and the pause of @sturtgalleryandstudios as it reconfigures for the future. We need to work ever harder to advocate for craft and makers. We have an opportunity with Ai's push forward and backlash to embrace the handmade. We can be stronger together. Ahead of us is the reinvigoration of Craft Australia (@worldcraftscouncil_aus ) - become a member, and help shape craft's future.

It felt strangely apt that today was spent - not at my jewellery bench - but working on an article about the future of collecting studio glass by Australian institutions (for the new @ausglass_au magazine). Great to have these discussions. 🙏🏻 Keep craft at the table.

Let's not get swallowed in the fray.

I enjoyed seeing @larsen.birte exhibition over the weekend at @galleryjenningskerr - a beautifully lit and sensitive show.

"Larsen reconfigures her material from the garden, reorganising patterns and sequences into these abstract sculptures. Pushing the natural into grids. The elder trees, that Larsen grew up surrounded by in Denmark, have an opposite pattern of branching, with the stems forming across from one another in a Y-shape. This fork beautifully represents her own journey, branching-off into a cultural hybridity," writes James Kerr in the room sheet.

I’ve just learnt my March tour with @agnswmembers to Mexico City and Oaxaca has booked out! 🙏🏻🌵💗 What a privilege it is to share my passion for this incredible place. There’s a Nahuatl word that means ‘to hug with the soul’ - apapacho. That’s exactly what travel in Mexico gives you.

I love curating these journeys and sharing my knowledge on Mexican Modernism and artisanal crafts. The Gallery’s Art in Focus tours are designed for small groups who are intrepid, curious and looking for authentic engagement with people, art, culture, and design. And (shhhh), I am excited to be curating other tours in Latin America …. watch this space.

I wrote on Liam’s @fleming_liam work recently for @vaultartmagazine and I have to say, the work just keeps getting better. The colours of these new pieces are so so great - think mint toothpaste and chewy caramels. He has nailed the scale and they teeter between a kookie precarity and elegant form. OMG what a treat to head down memory lane this morning for a preview of “Make, Believe, Magic - The World’s of The Jim Henson Company” at @qagoma

The exhibition opens to the public tomorrow and it is such a feast to the eyes and makes the heart sing - just what we need now!

Margaret Preston is a complex artist but also very simple. I’ve just returned from Melbourne, where I had the privilege of chatting with @beckettsara co-curator of @ngvmelbourne retrospective of Preston’s work - the first in 20 years.

Incredible loans for this show, giving a complete story with the inclusion of First Nations artists responding to her work. It’s big, it dives deep and it is beautiful … and it’s on until January so plan a trip - this is an important retelling of Australian art history.
