In the latest: The New York Times Style Magazine feature on Pakistani artists of the diaspora, Faiza Butt’s work stands out for the way it turns questions of belonging into something intensely visual and personal.

With a focus on her participation in the Venice Biennial, the article discuses the intricate, densely layered compositions of the artist that focus on migration, memory, and contemporary life, challenging the idea that identity has to belong neatly to one place.

As the article places her alongside a wider generation of Pakistani artists living and working across borders, Butt’s practice feels especially resonant: diasporic, but never detached; rooted, but constantly evolving.

Faiza Butt (b. 1973) is a Pakistani contemporary artist trained at NCA Lahore and the Slade School of Art, London. Her meticulously crafted works merge miniature painting techniques with photographic imagery, exploring gender, identity, media representation and cultural stereotypes. Through her intricate dot-based practice, she transforms images of masculinity, violence and the Muslim identity into visually striking, layered narratives. Her celebrated Pehlwan series further examines hyper-masculinity and the politics of the male gaze. by @faizaaugust7

Samar F Zia engages in a conversation with Faiza Butt on The Venice Biennale which opened on 09th May 2026 and will continue till 22 Nov 2026 displayed at Ex Farmacia Solveni, Dorsoduro 993-994, Venice.

“In light of this upcoming exhibition, sometime in April, I sat down to have a conversation with Faiza Butt. Although a lot of information was confidential at the time, I learnt that the state backed pavilion of Pakistan was to explore the crafts and indigenous cultures of Punjab, Butt yielded that she took into account historic Punjab, elucidating that borders and boundaries are fluid, they shift over time but the culture persists, morphs and expands to respond to the needs of the populace on the ground” @samarfzia_art

Faiza Butt’s presentation at the Venice bienalle includes “Shadow Relics” a series of sculptural works that reference Sikh and British colonial military honours, drawing on the visual language of medallions, regalia and ornament that recurs throughout the tapestry series. They reflect the medals awarded to Sikh soldiers of the British army who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Their forms highlight a hybridity in which local motifs
—such as elephants—coexist with European imagery,
including dragons, wreaths and Christian iconography.
The title Shadow Relics points to these jewels as traces
of histories that persist beyond their original context,
carrying the weight of memory and empire.
Shadow Relics was created in collaboration with Mohammed Hassan, a Lahore based Gem Dealer who provided technical support and specialist materials for the project. taken in La Biennale di Venezia by @faizaaugust7

A new article by Dawn on Pakistan’s pavilion (Punj•AB — A Sublime Terrain by Faiza Butt, curated by Beatriz Cifuentes Feliciano) at the 2026 Venice Biennale, focuses on the context of the artwork and the process behind it.

The article explores how Butt uses monumental textiles, embroidery and layered imagery to reimagine Punjab as a landscape shaped by memory, migration, rivers and centuries of cultural exchange.

The article also highlights the collaborative nature of the project, created with artisans from Havelicrafts, blurring the boundaries between contemporary art and traditional craft. It’s an insightful look at the ideas, processes and cultural narratives behind one of Pakistan’s most significant presentations on the international art stage. taken in La Biennale di Venezia by @faizaaugust7

Memory of a New Age 10, 2026 produced at the US Group facility in Izmir Town, this jacquard-woven tapestry was conceived by Butt and developed in collaboration with the factory. It represents an industrial counterpart to the handmade works in the exhibition. Drawing on the Arab period of Punjab’s history, it depicts the Shah Gardez Shrine in Multan. Woven in denim, the work foregrounds indigo as both material and chromatic reference. Its deep blue recalls the ceramic tilework of Multan’s shrines, linking industrial textile production to architectural and devotional traditions.
