I’m opening up my roster for new clients for the first time in a while. I have lots of experience with both resistance training and endurance training, and I’m especially well-suited to crafting concurrent programs that integrate the two.I offer both remote coaching and personal training.REMOTE COACHING: Not just programming. I focus a great deal on coaching the individual. I strongly prefer long-term client relationships, and I’m especially eager about working with folks who have some training experience and really want to LOVE their training. Helping clients design, stick to, and modify their training over the long haul is my favorite.PERSONAL TRAINING: I have a small amount of availability for personal training sessions @raincityfit in Capitol Hill, Seattle. Personal training is a great option if you are relatively new to the gym and want an in-person onboarding process to get into remote coaching. Also good if you want to spend some time working on particular lifts.Interested? Reach out to me via DM, or send me an e-mail at tsypkin@protonmail.com.#fakelosophy #resistancetraining #endurancetraining #concurrenttraining #fitness #strength #remotecoaching by @fakelosophy

In the jiu-jitsu discourse (what a funny use of that word), it’s common to hear people distinguish between “concepts” and “techniques”, often for the purpose of advocating for one over the other as a model of jiu-jitsu or a method of teaching it (or both). This distinction is slightly confused. Techniques are a kind of concept; what else could “a technique” be? A technique is an idea. What we really mean when we distinguish between concepts and techniques, is that there are some concepts which are highly general and others which are much more specific. “Stop their feet from moving and push on their hips” is general; a Tripod sweep is specific. Both are concepts. When we teach jiu-jitsu (when we teach anything), we are confronted with an epistemic gap. We must find some way to take something from within our mind, and communicate it to our students in a form which they can take and use. When it comes to the use of concepts (including techniques), the question we must ask is not “is this correct?”, but “of what use is this?” How can I turn this idea into something my students can use? There may be good reasons for strongly preferring one over the other. But I have a strong suspicion that how they are used makes a bigger difference.(Pictured: @amcmahan rag dolling me.) by @fakelosophy

The Work:-8:00 of open guard, supine vs standing; bottom player, trying to retain guard with frames only at first, then grips, but no sweeping; top player attempting to clear the line of the feet and crowd the hips, but remain standing.-6:00 open guard positional, seated vs standing-6:00 each of positional from side control, mount, and back controlAll at about 70% intensity, light but live. My major intention was just never letting the output climb high enough that I felt out of focus. All in the gi, all one on one with @cedric_ikaika_jonathan. by @fakelosophy

I’ve never observed Shavuot. Strictly speaking, I don’t intend to – I am simply not going to stay awake for 24 hours. But the idea of a holiday the basic point of which is to read LITERALLY all day is certainly something I can get behind. In that spirit, I’m going to try to get through the following over the course of the holiday — without staying up too far past my bedtime:-Deuteronomy 14:22-16:17, the weekly Torah portion for Shavuot-“On Judaism and Liberty”, an essay by Rabbi Aaron Samuel Tamares-“Loving The Stranger”, chapter eight of Rabbi Shai Held’s book “Judaism Is About Love”-Finish reading Pirkei Avot-Finish rereading “The Subject and Power”, a lecture by Michel Foucault-Finish rereading Wendell Berry’s essays “Two Minds” and “The Total Economy”Those last few probably don’t qualify as “Torah study” under any but the stretchiest definition. But since every Jew is a proper and coequal inheritor of our tradition, I claim the shared right to reinterpret, abandon, and generate anew as I see fit.I’ll also jump in for at least a few hours of Shavuot programming from Judaism Unbound. by @fakelosophy

Closed up shop for the day @frameworkseattle in solidarity with @indivisibleteam and other grassroots groups call for a nationwide economic shutdown. Instead of classes, we hosted a Rollathon fundraiser for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. Thanks to the generosity of my pledges, I was able to raise $2100 for the @n.w.i.r.p. Not sure yet what the total raised by all attendees will be, but lots of people (this photo is just a few of them) turned out and put the work in for a good cause, so I’m anticipating a great result.Over the last few years, I’ve become more and more skeptical about the idea of human progress. There are surely some things that are unambiguously better: less disease, for example, and more food. But I can’t escape the sense that in every generation we navigate the same core conflicts, that there are certain tensions which are constitutive, perhaps even definitive, of the human condition. What I do believe in is the possibility of repairing the world. Not an abstract, future world, but the present world. In this world, we can feed the hungry; comfort the suffering; protect the vulnerable; and love (a concrete act!) our neighbor. This is the second time we’ve held a fundraiser for the N.W.I.R.P. I am a child of refugees, who themselves were brought here by an immigrant aid organization (HIAS, formerly the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), and so this mitzvah is especially important to me. On top of that, immigrants, who are always at risk, are especially so now, and I feel that this creates a particular kind of ethical obligation towards them. But I can borrow simpler words, from Leviticus 19:34: “The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love them as you love yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”Shabbat Shalom. by @fakelosophy

The world’s quickest explainer on resistance training for jiu-jitsu (plus two myths).Explainer: There exists a thing we can call “basic strength training”. In brief, this is training which focuses on improving full body strength (the ability to produce force), and builds muscle to support that strength. The strength developed is general, meaning that it is not necessarily based around any particular lifts (such as squat/bench/deadlift).For the VAST majority of people doing jiu-jitsu, basic resistance training is what you need. Maybe add in some neck training and grip training which a basic resistance training program may not offer.Myth 1: Bodyweight is best for BJJ. The idea is that, for some reason, exercises which use your own bodyweight as the source of resistance carry over especially well to grappling. This is not true. Your body does not know the difference between resistance coming from your own weight and resistance coming from a barbell, dumbbell, or machine. There are plenty of good bodyweight movements, but there is no reason to do calisthenics for calisthenics sake (and there are good reasons NOT to limit yourself to only bodyweight exercises).Myth 2: You should do weighted shrimps. Put more generally, you should resistance train by doing movements which mimic things we often do in jiu-jitsu, but with load – such as doing hip escapes with a resistance band. This idea mischaracterizes how strength training transfers to the mat – we develop general attributes in the gym, and the sport training itself bridges the gap between general and specific capacities.Get damn strong through basic resistance training with movements that train a lot of muscle through a large range of motion. Train jiu-jitsu to make the benefits of your strength specific. Don’t do anything silly like only using bodyweight exercises or working up to a 1 rep max Granby roll.If you’d be interested in a video on this topic, let me know! The Work:-Power Squat-Braced Single Leg RDL-EZ Bar Upright Row by @fakelosophy
