Five Things About Learning
‌
Classes at Framework BJJ Seattle are based on our best understanding of the nature of learning. Here’s five things you should know about how learning works to get the most out of your jiu-jitsu practice.
‌
1) Learning Takes Time
‌
Come to practice with the mindset that the work you do today is building something for tomorrow. Challenging skills take time to develop, and even when it doesn’t feel like it, your effort is adding up! A fruit can’t be rushed to ripening.
‌
2) Learning Looks Messy
‌
If everything you do during practice looks neat and clean, you aren’t being challenged! Mess, chaos, and a healthy dose of failure suggest that you’re working near the limits of your ability – exactly where you need to be for continued growth.
‌
3) Learning isn’t Linear
‌
You may find that something clicks one day, is gone the next, and turns back up for you a month later. That’s a normal part of developing skill! Eventually those skills stick for good, as long as you stick with working on them.
‌
4) Learning is Driven by Intention
‌
When you focus on what you’re trying to accomplish, you put yourself in the best position to gain new skills. Don’t worry about “doing it right” – just try to solve the problem, and you’ll be amazed at the solutions you come up with!
‌
5) Learning is About You
‌
Ultimately, your learning process is YOUR learning process. The more you put yourself in the driver’s seat and engage with your practice, the better you’ll get, and the faster you’ll get there.

SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT: On Sunday, September 13th, we’ll be hosting @rosierollz for a two hour seminar on upper body guards in the gi.

Rosie is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt with over a decade of experience training, competing, and coaching alongside some of the best teams in the world. Through her online platforms, she has built a reputation for breaking down complex techniques into practical, applicable concepts that grapplers of all levels can learn from and use.

I’m really excited to host Rosie, who consistently creates some of the most clear and useful content on the BJJ internet.

Yesterday @kimramen, @arjun.srikureja, @shubamgupta123, @kyleuy_, and teammate Hojin from @identityjiujitsu participated in the first men’s Quintet event hosted by our good friends @roguejjhq. They faced an extremely tough team in the first round and while they didn’t pick up the win, they did do more important things: trained hard to prepare, performed with focus, intent, and sportsmanship, and put themselves and their jiu-jitsu to the test. As always, I am deeply proud!

Huge thanks to @zicobjj for helping the team prepare and coaching them on the day, and to our wonderful community for supporting them, particularly those of you who attended to cheer them on. Thanks also to the crew at Rogue Jiu-Jitsu for putting together these great events, and to Identity Jiu-Jitsu for partnering with us to make a team. I feel very fortunate that we get to be part of such a wonderful grappling community here in Seattle. by @frameworkseattle

This past weekend was our third annual Frameily gathering – and what a gathering it was!

Friday evening’s seminar with @drew_tine was full of the kind of jiu-jitsu I’ve come to expect from Drew: detailed, efficient, pragmatic, and never made more complicated than it needs to be. (I also liked that it emphasized getting to top position 😂).

Saturday’s open mat was tough and technical. Leading up to the weekend, I talked a lot about how important sustaining our connection to @frameworkbjj is. There are many reasons for that, but one of the most important is to maintain the quality of jiu-jitsu I learned from Drew. So when he tells me how good all of your jiu-jitsu feels, I’m reassured that we are on the right path.

The highlight, of course, was the promotion of six new Framework BJJ black belts: @miketorreshq , @asari.garami, @rod.meira, @bjjgganbu, @bjjpete, and @emslens_1714. There’s too much to say about each of them to do it in a single post, so instead let me come back to the theme of Frameily weekend: community. One of the things community implies is dependence – to be in community with someone is to depend on one another. Each of these six individuals is someone on who I, and Framework Seattle, depend. In the most literal and immediate sense, Framework Seattle as it is would not be possible without their contributions both on and off of the mat.

I know I speak for Mike when I say that we are deeply proud and grateful, and this weekend was a stark and beautiful reminder. Thank you to everyone in our community, whether you were with us for the Frameily gathering or not! by @frameworkseattle

I am grateful beyond words to everyone who helped me along the way - family, instructors, and training partners … especially those in Seattle and Seoul. Achieving this milestone was truly a joint effort. Thank you everyone for your encouragement and support over the past 11 years!

This week, @asari.garami’s Monday evening class worked on passing from the single under position — a variant of under-the-legs guard passing.

Passing underneath the legs is a powerful way to put pressure on the bottom player and take away a lot of their offensive options.

We’ll be working more of it tonight at 7 PM. See you then! by @frameworkseattle

Last week’s fundraiser for the @n.w.i.r.p was a rousing success. I went into the event hoping we would raise $5000. I’m thrilled to announce that we absolutely CRUSHED that: in total, we were able to raise $10,127 (not accounting for those of you who were able to get your employers to match your donations)!

This is a testament to Framework Seattle’s extended community – our coaches, members, and friends from other schools who took time off of their jobs, engaged friends and family, and put in the physical work to raise money for a good cause.

The nature of charitable giving is that the good we do often occurs at a distance. We get the thank you letters and the pats on the back – which is nice, but it’s easy to forget that our giving does real good for real people: people like my parents, who would likely never have made it to the US without immigrant aid organizations.

The money we raised will help the NWIRP to continue the good work they do, for immigrants like my parents, in pursuit of a better life for their children.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

WEDNESDAY 5/7/2026

Continuing our focus on passing the guard, tonight’s class emphasized staging positions – intermediate positions in which you get your partner’s feet off of you, and force them to bear your weight. Staging positions allow us to slow the game down, wear our partner out, and work to consolidate the pass. If you pay close attention, you’ll notice that you pass through staging positions more often than not when you pass the guard.

What are some staging positions you often utilize? by @frameworkseattle
