This week, @asari.garami’s Monday evening class worked on passing from the single under position — a variant of under-the-legs guard passing.

Passing underneath the legs is a powerful way to put pressure on the bottom player and take away a lot of their offensive options.

We’ll be working more of it tonight at 7 PM. See you then!

WEDNESDAY 5/7/2026

Continuing our focus on passing the guard, tonight’s class emphasized staging positions – intermediate positions in which you get your partner’s feet off of you, and force them to bear your weight. Staging positions allow us to slow the game down, wear our partner out, and work to consolidate the pass. If you pay close attention, you’ll notice that you pass through staging positions more often than not when you pass the guard.

What are some staging positions you often utilize?

Ya’ll know that I cannot, WILL not, let a holiday open mat go by without a promotion if I can help it.

Thanks to everyone who came out to train today, and a huge congratulations to semi-official Framework Seattle wrestling coach @lizzzyem on her well deserved promotion to blue belt! 🔵🔵🔵

Some of the action from this week’s Tuesday and Wednesday evening Foundations classes. The topic: open guard with an emphasis on the bottom player.
‌
When playing guard, your objectives are to keep the top player in front of you, make and maintain effective connections to them, and use those connections to destabilize them and take the top position.
‌
Our Foundations program at Framework Seattle develops a practical understanding of “how to play the game” of jiu-jitsu, rather than a focus on specific techniques. Our goal is to provide a practice environment in which each student can grow their jiu-jitsu in a unique way that suits their personality and physical abilities. We use live resistance, always with an emphasis on cooperation, safe training habits, and a focus on building skills, not winning rounds.
‌
If you’ve been thinking about trying jiu-jitsu, this is your sign!
