Self-gifts.
The Bobby Heenan fig is a short production run by Epic Toys in UK - brand new December 2024. I'm not exactly steeped in wrestling, but I really dig the design of this, and Heenan really was a master storyteller, and that's something I always admire.
I won't say what I spent to get it - the shipping, ugh.

The Plastic Man is a few years old, based on the wonderful Brave & Bold cartoon. I've always been into the fringe DC characters, and might start just collecting up different toys that've been produced for Eel O'Brien. (The current Black Label mini is NOT what I want for the character at all tho.)

With all the "bin digging" Jim Lee has been doing as Pres/Pub/CCO of the comic company these past few years, and James Gunn penchant to elevate oddballs, the definition of fringe feels like it's really changing now.

More Plastic Man!
1968's Brave & the Bold.
Good cover from a young Neal Adams - in training to be great for the 1970s.

Sekowsky can't spike the ball Neal sets up for him, though it's still fun execution. You can feel the TV show being filtered through Bob Haney's kooky mind - imagine if Adam West could do this on color tv with a TOS Star Trek budget?

Dig the "Some Famous Plastic Men" filler article.

The backup feature is something... A solo Robin adventure written by David Vern with art by Jim Mooney - I was REALLY convinced the art was Steve Ditko. Mr. 50/50 looks like he escaped from an issue of Mr. A, hiding from his creator as Budget Two-Face.

The last slide, advertising two of the most extremely opposite comic covers possible. Wow!

I assume this will have something to do creating a new way to force ads into our eyes.
Also, why is it worded so weirdly?

Hey @meta and @instagram why do you let these dangerous and absurd lies on your app?
Why do you constantly put the lgbtqa community in danger? Just for the few dollars you get for running these ads?
You should be ashamed.

Wesley Dodds, the original Sandman of the DC Universe.

I'm probably one of a handful of fans who prefer Dodds over the ethereal version that started Vertigo (essentially started).

I'm a longtime lover of pulp characters like The Shadow, The Spider, The Avenger. DC's take on the genre, Sandman, alongside The Crimson Avenger, Blue Beetle, and (later) The Question created a great pocket for telling grounded stories and dealing with more Human stakes.

As a design, The Sandman can't be beat. The gas mask and gun under a fedora is alien and terrifying. There's PROBABLY a line to be drawn from the look all the way to Iron Man's armor, with stops at Batman's cowl, Michael Myers white mask, The Cybermen, and Darth Vader too. It's iconic.

I was lucky to be at the right age for Matt Wagner / Steven T. Seagle's revival of the character - thanks owed to the Master of Dreams version that started a few years earlier. Set in the absolute earliest days of the DCU, each arc explored contemporary issues, set in the 1930s. It took an important idea, that the social problems/prejudices we deal with today have always been present in America, and for the most part we've always ignored them and scapegoated the victims.

More often than not, the stories didn't have a happy ending. Even if the villain got caught, they'd have left a trail of pain and death in their bloody boot prints.

The 1930s visuals were designed and mostly handled by Guy Davis, who reimagined Wesley Dodds as a short, chubby, Jewish man, emotionally scarred by trench warfare of World War 1. All the people looked like People, chiseled chins of typical comic heroes were very seldom seen. Shadows stuck to everything and everyone like tar. I could imagine the alley smell of piss, fresh cigarettes, boozy breathe.

As the series went along, its universe gradually expanded, retroactively planting seeds that would become the DC's first era of heroes, before Superman or Batman. Stories importantly featured Dodd's paramour, Diana Belmont, a thoroughly modern woman with strong ideas, a radical past, and her own future goals. (continued in comments)

Any Star*Blazers fans here?
When I was a kid in about 1980 I fell in love with this cartoon - the Americanized version of Space Battleship Yamato.
My older sister and I would HOLD A TAPE RECORDER UP TO THE TV speaker to save the audio, for relistening on long car trips.

The anime has had multiple sequels and even a live action adaption in 2010.

In the US, Comico comics published a handful of anime adaptions like this in their day - Robotech (Macross) did very well for them - and some original sequel stories too I believe.

🤔 I wonder if the US versions were ever exported to Japan, and if so how they were received by fans there?

Artist Doug Rice really excels at the full and double-page spreads in addition to really nailing the look of the iconic Yamato, and cast of characters. Rice co-created this series and a sequel with Phil Foglio. Foglio has worked across the comics industry for years and is well regarded for his ongoing Girl Genius series, creating a bunch of Magic cards, adapting the cult favorite Myth-Adventures book series to comics - plus an Angel & The Ape miniseries from DC that I remember fondly from the early 90s.

Do yourself a favor and track down the anime (it used to be easily available on youtube). If you find it to your liking, the Star*Blazers comics° are still there to find in back issue bins.

°There is of course an original Space Battleship Yamato manga created by Leiji Matsumoto between 1974-1979, that is gorgeous to look at and read. There's a nice hardcover of it available in English released by Seven Seas in 2019 (why not check your library for it).
