Fanflus is thrilled to present "Dumb Luck", a solo exhibition of artist Paz Sher @paz.sher , curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan. The exhibition takes place in the basement of 29 Henry Street, which Sher conceives as an empty space interfered with a layer of gestures and objects that simultaneously invade and evade life‘s basic functional demands - an arrangement we’re all coerced to share.
.
"Dumb Luck" traces and responds to current condition - at times anxious, at times melancholic, bearing an emotional weight that echoes the reality we inhabit. As Roger Caillois defined "alea," the game of pure chance, as a state in which the subject has no control over the outcome, entirely external to their will, Sher‘s constellation of objects is likewise governed by an equally uncontrollable, near-fated logic of chance. It is precisely through their openness to contingency that these spaces quietly constitute a form of resistance.

Opening tonight 5-8PM
.
"Dumb Luck" is Paz Sher‘s solo exhibition curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan, staged in the basement project space of 29 Henry Street - its title fusing luck as causeless chance with "dumb" as muteness, a breakdown of language mirroring a world where no shared order any longer holds. For Sher, the basement isn’t neutral ground; it‘s a space already coerced into serving "life’s basic functional demands" - territory he interferes with, invades, and evades through a constellation of objects.

Each gesture stages a small failure of control, echoing what Roger Caillois called alea - the game of pure chance in which the subject submits entirely to forces outside their will. In Sher‘s hands, that submission becomes strangely defiant, turning contingency itself into a quiet form of resistance.

Thanks for joining us this Thusday evening.
Dumb Luck, solo exhibition of Paz Sher, on view through September 1, 2026.
.
"Dumb Luck" names a kind of fortune that arrives without cause, indifferent to reason, and ungovernable. "Dumb" doubles as muteness, a failure of speech. This muteness resonates with Sher's conviction that social structures have to be first imagined in order to take place, yet the contemporary moment feels somewhat discordant. No cultural center any longer seems capable of holding such a shared order together; amid the world's ongoing instability, things are fracturing, and we seem to remain in a perpetual state of emergency and fluctuating degrees of agitation.

He Spoke to the Birds, curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan @fanflus at AAIE Center for Contemporary Art in Rome, brought together works by Jeremias Rumpl, @jeremias_rumpl Diego Azzola, @d.ego_studio and Huang Zhe zhehuangart to revisit Arte Povera through the changing properties of zinc, water, and smoke.

In this new review for INES_Magazina, Serena Hanzhi Wang @serenawawaweewa examines how corrosion, infrastructure, and atmosphere shape the works, connecting Italy’s industrial past with contemporary promises of technological progress. Across the exhibition, materials follow processes that exceed human intention, questioning our confidence in controlling the conditions of the future.

"The exhibition wields the same degree of uncomfortability and strangeness that one expects from a field of crash-landed objects of extraterrestrial origin."

Liam Otero (@artstigator)'s latest review takes us inside Dumb Luck, Paz Sher (@paz.sher)'s solo exhibition at 29 Henry Street, curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan (@fanflus) — where Sher "transformed an empty basement-level gallery into a helter-skelter installation defined by ruptures, disruptions, and convergences," sabotaging "the notion of the white cube gallery as a sacrosanct cultural space."

Gambler's Run (2025) resembles "an extended ceiling tile that looks to have crashed into the gallery space, yet remains attached to the ceiling as if it were a dead mobile." Untitled (wall) — a vertical section of cut drywall removed and horizontally placed before the hole it left — conceals Head Birth (2026), "a split aluminum-like sculpture inspired by an Ancient Greco-Roman portrait bust whose left eye is pierced by a pole. Suddenly, the space takes on a more archaeological atmosphere."

Paralyzed (2023), a floor-based pair of disembodied eyes, carries "a bit of a Mona Lisa effect in their capacity to seemingly not take their gaze off of you when in their field of vision." And Tondo (2026) — an AI-expanded photograph of a horse contained by a blue-netted cage — feels "antagonistic in having the horse appear trapped in a cage while hung on a wall in a gallery, a kind of panopticon."

"Dumb Luck challenges one's sense of familiarity, asking viewers to immerse themselves in a disorderly environment where each part may possibly be fitted together like a puzzle for a much bigger picture."

"Paz Sher’s installation and Fan’s curation extend this logic of visibility into the viewer’s experience. The works occupy walls, ceiling, corners and passages, and their relationships rarely reveal themselves from a single vantage point. Connections have to be discovered: the viewer changes position, follows a rope around a wall, looks upward at a displaced table, approaches an architectural opening, or recognizes that elements encountered separately belong to the same work. Sher has described the exhibition in terms of architectural intervention and questions of restraint and autonomy, while Fan’s framing introduces chance and conditions beyond individual control. The installation makes these concerns physical. Seeing becomes an incremental process, with meaning accumulating through movement and association."

Borshch of Art, in collaboration with the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh-A), invites you to join us on Saturday, October 3, for the opening of Intergenerational Dialogue, featuring works from the NTSh-A’s permanent art collection and archives. This collaborative project reflects both organizations' shared commitment to cultural preservation, public engagement, and access to underrepresented art histories.

The core curatorial vision is to highlight an under-recognized yet significant body of work by Ukrainian-American artists, featuring renowned artists such as Alexander Archipenko, Jacques Hnizdovskiy, and Edvard Kozak alongside lesser-known but equally talented artists such as Roman Patchovskyi, Mykhailo Moroz, Volodymyr Lasovsky, Petro Andrusiv, and Bohdan Borzhemsky. This exhibition offers the public a unique opportunity to engage with cultural heritage often overlooked in mainstream art historical discourse.

📅 Saturday, October 3, 5- 7 p.m
📍 Shevchenko Scientific Society
🎯63 4th Ave, New York, NY 10003
🎫 Admission is free; RSVP required

We’re excited to share this interview for Dumb Luck. Artist Paz Sher @paz.sher and I put a lot of effort into unpacking the ideas behind the exhibition, and we’re really happy with how the conversation turned out.
Thank you Yonatan Eshban-Laderman @_.ledi._ for proposing such thoughtful, in-depth questions, they really pushed us to think deeper about our process.

This interview is now featured on ARTEFUSE @artefuse, and a huge thank you to Jamie @jamiemartinezstudio for featuring us!!

Thanks so much Mer Mora @mmor.art for this thought-provoking review of Paz Sher‘s solo exhibition! Love it!

"Anyone born in the 90s and after is familiar with the phrase “it’s the damn phone.” The first generations to grow up at the same time as the internet was setting its foot has heard their parents use that phrase to excuse their problematic behavior. And as social media keeps evolving its addictive nature through curated algorithms and consumerist trends, it has also transformed the way in which we receive information. We receive all types of information constantly, and as a result, we have become extremely desensitized to all of it. One second it’s a video of a cute cat, the next a news report of the latest tragedy, then an influencer asking you to run, not walk, to purchase the next thing you need for fall. So maybe it is that damn phone. Or perhaps, more precisely, it is what the phone has taught us to accept: a world where destruction can exist alongside us without demanding our attention for very long, and as a result, becoming background noise to our everyday life.

Filling the basement of 29 Henry Street in Chinatown with sculpture, video, AI-generated imagery, and the destruction of the space itself, the exhibition stages a world built around the chaos that destruction leaves behind. The curator Fan frames this through Roger Caillois’s concept of alea or pure chance, where the outcome is completely outside of the player’s control. In Dumb Luck, we do not witness this moment, though; we do not grieve the collapse of shared order. Instead, the exhibition traces what happens afterwards, how we have acclimated to its absence."
