He Spoke to the Birds, curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan @fanflus at AAIE Center for Contemporary Art in Rome, brought together works by Jeremias Rumpl, @jeremias_rumpl Diego Azzola, @d.ego_studio and Huang Zhe zhehuangart to revisit Arte Povera through the changing properties of zinc, water, and smoke.

In this new review for INES_Magazina, Serena Hanzhi Wang @serenawawaweewa examines how corrosion, infrastructure, and atmosphere shape the works, connecting Italy’s industrial past with contemporary promises of technological progress. Across the exhibition, materials follow processes that exceed human intention, questioning our confidence in controlling the conditions of the future.

Borshch of Art, in collaboration with the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh-A), invites you to join us on Saturday, October 3, for the opening of Intergenerational Dialogue, featuring works from the NTSh-A’s permanent art collection and archives. This collaborative project reflects both organizations' shared commitment to cultural preservation, public engagement, and access to underrepresented art histories.

The core curatorial vision is to highlight an under-recognized yet significant body of work by Ukrainian-American artists, featuring renowned artists such as Alexander Archipenko, Jacques Hnizdovskiy, and Edvard Kozak alongside lesser-known but equally talented artists such as Roman Patchovskyi, Mykhailo Moroz, Volodymyr Lasovsky, Petro Andrusiv, and Bohdan Borzhemsky. This exhibition offers the public a unique opportunity to engage with cultural heritage often overlooked in mainstream art historical discourse.

📅 Saturday, October 3, 5- 7 p.m
📍 Shevchenko Scientific Society
🎯63 4th Ave, New York, NY 10003

"The artists do not simply use materials but listen to how materials carry time, generate images, and tell their own stories."

Jiang Renlai's latest review takes us inside "He Spoke To The Birds", a group exhibition at the AAIE Center for Contemporary Art (@aaieartcenter ) in Rome, presented by AAIE & FanFlus and curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan (@fanflus ) — bringing together three artists from China, Italy, and Austria through a shared belief: "materials are not simply tools to be controlled and used, but also something with which artists seek to enter into dialogue."

Huang Zhe (@zhehuangart ) enters into dialogue with smoke as a material — "not real smoke, but a visual symbol rooted in his memories of growing up in a Buddhist family. Against green-toned grounds, the smoke layered across appears as a thin veil between the present and the past, between the viewer and the artist's memory."

Bergamo-based Diego Azzola (@d.ego_studio ) combines painting and galvanized pipes, where "the pairing of classical painted elements with industrial materials creates a sense of rupture between the historical and the contemporary." His blue tones and marine elements reflect concern about "ecological transformation, such as global warming, rising sea levels, and humanity's growing estrangement from nature."

Jeremias Rumpl (@jeremias_rumpl ) cedes part of the creative process to materials themselves — acid corrosion and natural weathering leaving marks on zinc plates, "suspending their surfaces between formation and decay." The eroded surfaces "evoke fragments left after war, damaged buildings, or material remnants that persist silently after violence."

"'He Spoke To The Birds' is not only a poetic title but also a key to the exhibition." On view through July 28, 2026 at AAIE, Rome.

Presented at the AAIE Center for Contemporary Art in Rome, He Spoke to the Birds brings together works by Jeremias Rumpl, Diego Azzola, and Huang Zhe in an exhibition curated by Fanfan Yuxuan Fan. Taking its title from Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev’s reflection on Saint Francis of Assisi and Arte Povera, the exhibition asks what it might mean to listen not only to human voices, but also to birds, ruins, pipes, smoke, and matter itself.

Rather than treating Arte Povera as a historical style, the exhibition approaches it as an ongoing way of thinking about materials, energy, and nonhuman presence. In this conversation, the curator, artists, and AAIE’s director discuss material agency, Rome’s layered history, and the forms of attention that matter may ask from us.

Experimental Tea 🫖 essay for this week focuses on an exhibition in New York from this spring. To Elongate, To Entwine brings together the sculptural practices of Sangmin Lee and Yixuan Wu to explore fragility, adaptation, and memory through forms that appear both vulnerable and resilient. Deeply grateful to writer Fanfan Yuxuan Fan for this thoughtful and poetic review of my solo exhibition Fool’s Hour at Art Cake.

It means a lot to see the work being read with such care through lived duration, bodily intuition, fairground temporality, and the quiet resistance against measuring time only through productivity.

Thank you for spending time with the exhibition and for giving language to the fragile, circular, and suspended sense of time that I have been exploring in this body of work.
