Five years ago we celebrated the launch of Fang Recording, @morleysdartmouth & @frictionbooks (at 45 Portland Street in Dartmouth) with a one-minute jingle called “We’re Changing Our Name”- featuring many of the studio’s musical friends.

Today being the studio & shop’s fifth anniversary it was time for another musical mashup - except this one is six minutes long because everyone’s attention span has increased considerably since 2021.

“FRBQ’d: A Treal Story” introduces the Fang Recording house band (aka @thebroodhfx ) backing up @joelplaskett , @alexanderthegallant and @sarahswire . Thanks to @mikehallfilms for the great camera & editing work and @thomasstajcer for engineering (and for making his swan song infomercial appearance).

Our Neumann U67 ❤️

Built in 1960 in West Germany, this vintage tube condenser has been a studio staple for generations. Known for its warm, detailed sound, it’s one of our most frequently used vocal microphones and one of the many vintage microphones in the collection here at Fang Recording! by @fangrecording

Three flavours of real analog reverb at Fang!

Our EMT 140 plate, EMT 240 gold foil, and Orban 111b spring reverb each come from a different chapter in the history of studio reverb. From the large steel plate units of the late 1950s, to EMT’s compact gold foil design, to the unmistakable sound of a real spring.

All three are available for recording and mixing sessions at Fang, and we’re now also offering remote analog reverb processing!

Send us your dry tracks and we’ll run them through the hardware of your choice, record the results through our system, and send you back high-resolution wet returns ready to drop into your session.

High fives, best wishes and big love and thanks to Thomas Stajcer - the manager and head engineer @fangrecording for the last 13 years.
Last Friday marked Thomas’ final day at Fang before he moves on to his new career.

Thomas engineered every record of mine since The Park Avenue Sobriety Test and has recorded hundreds of artists and musicians, both local and international, in his time at the studio. Fang wouldn’t be what it is without him- he literally wired the joint. Thomas has passed the torch (actually a headlamp), the tape machine remote, the mouse and a brain full of his knowledge on to Alex Burris (who has been engineering many sessions at Fang for the last 10 years) and more recently to Talon Beek, who will be running the studio with Alex moving forward.

We threw a late notice surprise party at the studio for Thomas a couple weeks back as a send off. Here are some photos from the shindig and a few through the years at the end. Rock on, Thomas. We’ll miss ya. ❤️

At Fang, we offer recording, mixdown and digital-to-tape transfers with 3 separate machines, each with its own distinct flavour—whether you’re working with us in the studio or sending us tracks remotely.

- Studer A80 - 2” 16 Track -

We can track anything directly to 2” tape. Whether it be getting the drum tracks down for the foundation of your record, or an entire band playing live off the floor.
Linked with a C.L.A.S.P. system, we can record the tape-recorded tracks in real time back to the computer so you have the on-tape files instantly!

If you’ve already recorded digitally and are looking for the tape effect for your tracks, individual stems, tracks, or an entire session can be transferred from Pro Tools to 2” tape and back, giving your recordings that analog coating before heading back to the mix.

**Not in the area? Send us your digital files, and we can run them through the A80 and send the tape-processed tracks back to you!

- Studer A80 - ½” 2 Track -

With this mixdown machine, we can send your finished mix out of the console, onto ½” tape and back, letting the whole song hit tape as the mix is finalized.

With two tracks available, this machine can also be used for a fully analog two-channel performance: vocals and guitar, stereo solo piano or any two-track recording of your choosing.

- Studer A810 - ¼” 2 Track -

This ¼” machine takes us further back in time with all the capabilities of the ½” but with even slower tape speeds for more vintage tape character.

Push it a little further and you can achieve antique territory with speeds as slow as 3.75 inches/second! taken in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia by @fangrecording

Huge congratulations to @jdutchermusic on his *record* 2nd Polaris Music Prize! What a wonderfully talented and all-around beautiful human being. We think the world of Jeremy and his incredible artistry - may he be a pillar for us all for years to come.

As a huge fan of his first record, I was humbled by his request to come to Fang to finish his second album. We are very pleased to have helped get this new amazing album across the finish line :)

Listen to it! If you ever get the chance, go hear him perform or speak. A most authentic voice and individual!

Happy Monday y'all. Hope you all had a great summer.
This photo was taken July 12, when Wu-Tang Killa Bees 9th Prince, Dom Pacino, LA The Darkman and Kinetic 9 came to Fang to record some vocals. Also seen here are Obediya Jones-Darrell and Herbert Brown.
We all geeked out over the 2" tape (and CLASP), Neve desk and Clairtone boom box (which houses Joel's Tone Loc cassette, which was also geeked out on.) I only wish I kept my SP-1200!
