This is a special one ~ ‘Alice’s Amphora,’ a piece conceived to celebrate my mama @alicelouisewaters’s 80th birthday this month. I had been wanting to make something that honors her love of flowers and arranging, and that takes inspiration from her kitchen collection. It was either going to be a tiny bud vase (ha!) or a large statement vase, and we settled on the latter. It’s based on the design of an old Etruscan-style amphora she’s had in the corner of her kitchen for as long as I can remember. The large collection of seasonal blooms or boughs that lives there is a defining part of the total aesthetic of the room and I have always loved that you could tell exactly where you were in time and space by observing what flowers were gathered there. This piece was made for @permanentcollection in collaboration with Niki Shelley of @manueveryday, an extraordinarily talented Berkeley-based ceramicist who understood precisely what we were looking for and brought her incredible craft to bear in this design. As for the rich green color, it’s what my mom loves about it most, “It’s the color of nature, and it pulls the greens of the garden into the kitchen.” Happy birthday mama. Love you! I'm *very* excited to share that my dear friend @gretacaruso and I have just launched the Green Spoon: a new @substackinc (in layman terms: a chic newsletter) about cooking simple and delicious food for kids and their exhausted parents. Greta and I had our daughters within a month of each other last year and have been in constant conversation about how best to nourish their bodies and encourage the development of adventuresome palates. In our weekly dispatches, we’ll be sharing loads of simple recipes we’ve created during this time — things that will delight your littlest ones but also feed the rest of your family. We’ll be featuring interviews with other parents, cooks, nutritionists and more, as well as lists of favorite tools, equipment, gifts and off-the-shelf baby foods we don’t hate. Last week, @heathersper and I threw a *somehow* miraculously surprise dinner for my hubby in her beautiful garden. It was magical and sultry and twinkly and intimate and transporting. It was also SO delicious, thanks to Heather’s perfectly executed plates of herby steelhead crudo with @likefamily___ chili oil and Natacha’s (@midi_foods) brilliance in making my dreams of chicken salade Nicoise a reality (not to mention the 30 perfect @chezpanisse recipe chocolate pot de cremes) and to my dad for sending the delicious @singer.wine (which we all happily drank in excess). Thank you, above all to Heather and John for the hospitality, always, but also to all of our family and friends who show up and make merry and hold us in the warmth of their love and friendship. Today marks the 55th birthday of @chezpanisse and even though I wasn’t on the scene at the very beginning my life is so intertwined with that of the restaurant that it’s impossible not to feel this passage of time as something momentous. My little family came up from LA for the event and I’m so glad we did because it feels insanely special to watch my little girl experience the restaurant much as I did—slurping clams in bouillabaisse, gnawing on quail legs, delighting in baked Alaska—sitting at a table full of adults and basking in the warmth of this enduring family and all the special people who make this place unique, and sooooo delicious, and so so beautiful. Yesterday we celebrated Cecily’s 4th birthday 🥹… Because we are a family of #ChirriAndChirra super fans, the books were destined to be the party’s theme (if you have not yet visited the incredible Chirri and Chirra universe conceived by the brilliant Japanese author-illustrator, @doikaya, I highly recommend !!!). I made a few lightly book-spired dishes/drinks and we had a charming Chirri and Chirra pinata as a mascot (we did not hit it !!!) but the star of the show was an exquisite cake from the mind of pastry chef @tessafaulkner . Ethereal chiffon with strawberry cream and pandan frosting — it was as delicious as it was dreamy… and a perfect canvas for the little paper-maché Chirra and Chirri cake topper I made. Happy birthday C! You are the best person I know. I love you endlessly ❤️ by @fannysinger

In another (dream) life, I’m a scenographer at @bobbakermarionettes. Of all the reasons I love living in Highland Park, Bob Baker Marionette Theater might be #1. Founded in 1963, it’s the largest continuously operating puppet theater in the U.S. It’s hard to communicate the sheer volume of magic, whimsy, and creative genius that goes into absolutely every performance. Every time we see a show, my socks get knocked right off. Thank you, you guys, for proving that analogue *human* creativity is the most nourishing (and also mind-bending!!) kind. by @fannysinger

My mom’s summer compote… a smell that brings me back to my childhood, to heat that would turn fruit from ripe to rotten sometimes overnight. Any fruit that looked like it might imminently go south went into a pot on the stove, pits and all, with a splash of water to simmer just until softened and fragrant. It never left the stove because anyone walking by would eat a spoonful, or ladle it over cold, thick yogurt or spread it over French toast or pancakes. It was sometimes sweet, sometimes a little sour; she never used sugar— but it was always the essence of the season, all the good things unwasted. by @fannysinger
