My next book, ‘Salad, Always’, officially has a pub date (April 6!) and is available for pre-order! I dreamt up this book when I was pregnant with my daughter and it’s finally nearly here! Beautifully photographed by my pal @justinchung, this book is my salad manifesto, containing more than 90 recipes that span the globe and expand the limits of what a salad can be. Inspired by my myriad eating adventures with friends and family and by the core philosophies embodied by my mom’s restaurant @chezpanisse (where I used to work in the salad station!), you'll find everything from tips on how to gather and prepare ingredients (and also their backgrounds and histories) and useful advice for how to select the condiments that will make your salads sing. So many vetted home-run dressing recipes to have in rotation and so many handy techniques to enliven your relationship with my—and hopefully soon-to-be-your—favorite part of the meal. Fall is officially here on Tuesday. The days are getting darker earlier, and it’s time to stock up on beeswax candles (paired with our candleholders, made by @e.f.davies.clay). 
Our candles are a custom 8-inch pair of hand-dipped, 100% beeswax tapers, made by the monks of St. John’s Monastery in Cobleskill, New York. Clean-burning cotton wicks and honey-scented beeswax make these the perfect mess-free candles to burn nightly.

Salmon Creek Farm is a place to be slow. It is a place to be embodied. I’m borrowing @fritz_____ words here because I’ve found them to be both resonant and true. Every spring or summer for the past five years, I’ve stayed at Cedar cabin at @salmon_creek_farm, a place I have come to think of as magical. My ways of seeing and feeling have changed with each visit while walking up from and down to Cedar amongst towering redwoods or photographing different flowers on the farm. When I was there again in July, I began thinking about the rituals I’ve developed there, like returning to the same places along the Mendocino coast, places so beautiful that being away from them often leaves me feeling melancholy. Going back again has encouraged a slower, deeper way of looking, listening, and feeling. From the notes left by others who have stayed at Cedar, I know I’m not alone in this. A wise friend @adrianrosenfeld recently pointed me toward writing about embodiment in the age of AI. The gist is that, as we accelerate toward an uncertain future with machines, our capacity for human feeling and embodied experience, for the kind of slowness Salmon Creek makes possible, is among the most precious things we have to preserve. And composting our own 💩

A note from @fannysinger and a dip into her camera roll —   Last year, I shared some images from my summer camera roll, and decided to do it again. Even with Permanent Collection pieces in the homes of so many loyal customers—many of whom have been with us since day one: ten years ago!—we don’t often get to see the pieces in context (that said, if you’d like to share pictures of your Permanent Collection pieces, we’d love to see them!)

Summer is often when our pieces find their utmost purpose. Produce is bountiful and there’s a little more time—and more light into the evening—for cooking and gathering outdoors. Looking back through my camera roll of things I snapped or saved this summer I love seeing Permanent Collection pieces in use—whether it’s to contain the seemingly endless flow of produce that lands in my kitchen, or to serve basically everything I’ve cooked of late....or just woven into our otherwise (often) messy lives.

Permanent Collection pieces are meant to be used, passed around, and shared, and eventually passed down—they’re intended as functional display and useful tools, both. As ever, I want to make the experience of our everyday rituals and tasks more beautiful, more sensuous, more hospitable and more connected to the people and natural world from which they come.

I hope you enjoy these final dog days of summer,

My love affair with a bowl — a note from @fannysinger:
It’s no secret I love salad. I have a cookbook devoted to it, Salad, Always, out next spring. I make one at least once a day and am always the person bringing a big salad to the potluck. So when it comes to making and serving a great one, the tools matter — a lot.

Alice’s Salad Bowl was made in collaboration with my mother, inspired by a bowl in her own kitchen: large, wide, shallow — but ceramic, and too heavy to pass around a table. Making ours from redwood instead transformed the silhouette’s utility. Now it can be heaped with salad and still passed with ease.

The redwood was my mother’s choice, honoring her kinship with the nearly 200-year-old tree in her Berkeley backyard. What we didn’t know until testing prototypes was how it would perform in the kitchen: completely resistant to the rancidity that develops in wood exposed to oil and vinegar, again and again. The same porousness that makes it light also makes it dry quickly.

Beauty, function, and performance — to me, that’s what it means to be an heirloom.
