A mural becomes history when a community co-creates it 💙💛

For the past three years, I’ve served as Project Chair for SJSU’s new Filipino American History Mural. And after this past weekend, my heart couldn’t be any happier 🥰

Together, generations of students, alumni, families, community members, city and county leaders, and University leadership came together for the next major milestone in the mural’s development: Community Paint Day! 🎨

Through a guided “paint-by-numbers” experience, muralist and SJSU alumna Francesca Mateo, “ChiChai”, led dozens of community members in co-creating history. While rooted in Filipino American history, this movement is a powerful reminder that this mural belongs to us ALL 🙌🏽

My endless gratitude to ChiChai, President Cynthia Teniente-Matson, the Filipino Alumni Network SJSU, Paint Day Lead Marc Sanna, the Filipino American History Mural Committee, County of Santa Clara Supervisors Betty Duong and Margaret Abe-Koga, City of San José Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, event sponsors KeyPoint Credit Union and The Changemaker Initiative, and every volunteer, painter, donor, and community partner who helped make this milestone possible.

Looking ahead, our team now shifts our attention to the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the final unveiling of the Filipino American History Mural!!

📅 Mark your calendars: Friday, October 30, 1 PM
📍 SJSU Student Union Patio
🎟️ Event Registration: Coming soon!

Thank you to everyone for being a part of this journey with us! I wouldn’t have it any other way 🇵🇭

At Community Paint Day organized by San José State University’s Filipino Alumni Network (@fansjsu), we celebrated the Filipino American History Mural! 🇵🇭🎨

It was wonderful to gather with the SJSU community and uplift the generations of Filipino Americans and the farmworker movement who have helped shape San José and our region. Led by the Filipino American History Mural Committee and brought to life by SJSU alumna and artist Francesca “ChiChai” Mateo, this mural shows the power of community coming together to reclaim and preserve our stories. Our history belongs in our public spaces where the next generation can see themselves reflected in it. Maraming salamat to the Mural Committee, President @sjsuprezmatson), and everyone who organized, advocated, and picked up a paintbrush to bring this historic mural to life!

Keep an eye out! 🎨 The mural will be completed this October in celebration of Filipino American History Month. taken in San Jose State University by @fansjsu
