Five years is an important milestone. We're now old enough to have traditions—and still young enough to create new ones.

We kicked off the fifth SALA Retreat with something new: service.

Martha's Vineyard is home to more than 40 working farms, producing everything from vegetables and flowers to livestock, oysters, and fiber. One of its most remarkable is The FARM Institute in Katama, a 162-acre working farm and educational campus operated by The Trustees, the nation's first conservation and preservation organization. For more than 130 years, The Trustees has protected extraordinary places across Massachusetts while connecting people to the land through conservation, agriculture, and education.

Our first volunteer project brought SALA participants to The FARM Institute, where we planted vegetables in the community garden. This fall, those vegetables will be harvested for the Island Food Pantry and the Edgartown School—a reminder that leadership is measured not only by the conversations we have, but by what we leave behind for others.

Martha's Vineyard has become a place that welcomes our community each summer. Caring for this land—and for the people who call it home year-round—is one small way of expressing our gratitude.

We won't be here when the harvest comes. But maybe that's the point. Investing today so someone else can flourish tomorrow. Contributing, in a small way, to the place that has given so much to us.

Mary Oliver wrote, "Attention is the beginning of devotion." Today, attention became action.

Service is now part of the SALA Retreat. Each year, we'll begin our week by giving back to the Island community that has welcomed us so generously—planting seeds that will nourish others long after we've gone.
