Hey y’all, I’m starting fresh with a brand-new page for all things writing, performance, & storytelling — make sure to follow @iamcherylfarrell ♥️

repost from @iamcherylfarrell: Welcome everyone! I want to take a moment to (re)introduce myself 👋🏾

I’m Cheryl Farrell – yes, it rhymes 😉 I’m a Black woman “of a certain age” with many stories to tell. I was born & raised in South LA and to this day call it home. I’ve had an eclectic career, from VP of Diversity Communications at a major bank to TV personality and many jobs in between, but at the center of all I do is STORYTELLING.

I consider myself a storyteller and communications expert. I strongly believe that we learn more and connect better as humans through sharing our stories. (No more PowerPoints!) My mission is to help people *actually* talk to one another. Here’s how…

🌻 I’m the Founder of “Pop-Up Storytelling for Organizations,” a program for co-workers to connect and collaborate through storytelling. After 20 years in corporate life feeling unheard (and to be totally honest, making MYSELF small too), I started the Pop-Up series as a way to help others amplify their voices. It’s been so meaningful to see folks bring their stories to life, because YOUR STORY MATTERS. And it’s time that we create more spaces in our lives to share them. #PopUpStorytelling #StorytellingForBusiness

🎤 I’m also an award-winning speaker, writer & singer. My favorite word in all my stories is “Hope.” I often show up as a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, or your next-door neighbor with a good story to tell. No matter what, I’m all about sharing messages of shared humanity and justice in our everyday interactions. You can find me at my favorite storytelling hubs like @mothstories, @theplusmeproject, and The Story Salon.

❓And yes, I was one of the original #Jeopardy! Clue Crew members for 7 years, across 15 countries, and over 1,000 clues!

I like to think of this digital space as an offering of hope and storytelling tricks that you can carry with you anywhere – whether you’re with family, friends, colleagues, or an audience of strangers. Consider me your #StorytellingGuide 😄

I ALWAYS have a story. This past week, three revelations came to me that inspired new CherylFarrellisms. Maybe you can relate and be inspired.

☕️ “The way it works for me may not be the way it was designed.”

A cushioned backrest on my office chair is positioned upside down and has been for five years. But, it works just fine.

☕️ “No one is guaranteed more than today.”

An “elderly” cousin for whom I am an executor, died eight years ago. I received paperwork recently that shows he died (of natural causes) at an age I was a year ago!

☕️3 “The devil is a cheap date.”

I received an unwarranted (and perhaps mischievous) invoice for tech services.

Know and TELL your story. Why?

☕️ It gives others hope.
☕️ We find we are more alike than unalike.
☕️ We are quite fine being misunderstood.

In a recent CBS News interview musician, Jon Batiste reflected on his early days at Juilliard.

[AI] “His free spirited improvisational approach to music, heavily clashed with the school’s, highly structured classical methods. At one point, his instructors even sent him to see a psychologist because they didn’t know what to do with his non-conformity.”

What’s in your cup?

Today’s my birthday and I gifted myself an (online) facelift! 🎂 🖥️

I’m pleased to present my refreshed company website: www.cherylfarrell.com. 🎉🥳

I invite you to visit and witness the art and science of personal storytelling. Let me know what you think. What’s in your cup?

☕ Storytelling brings people together during change.
☕ Strategic storytelling solves problems brought on by change.
☕ There’s hope in personal stories that opens doors to collaboration.

Thanks to the team at @GoLive Design for their outstanding support, vision, and talent.

This powerful prayer from @damchell aligns with my work as a personal storytelling advocate. What we call ourselves is our story and this prayer asks God to direct our thoughts.

I also heard from Rev. @1powergirl who said, “God is concerned about how we treat ourselves. He says love yourself. Then you can love someone else.”

I hope you are inspired.🙌🏽

Dear God,

Today I bring You every name I have answered to that You never gave me.

The names spoken by people who misunderstood me.

The conclusions drawn from my mistakes.
The expectations I carried because someone decided who I was supposed to be.

Even the names I quietly gave myself after disappointment made me question what was still possible.

Father, I don’t want to keep agreeing with words You never spoke.

Your Word tells us that You changed Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, and Simon became Peter. Again and again, You showed us that a person’s history does not have the authority to write the final sentence over their life.

So today, help us separate what was said about us from what You say about us.

Somebody may have called us difficult when we were learning to speak up.

Somebody may have called us a failure because something didn’t work.

Somebody may have treated us as insignificant because they couldn’t see what You placed inside us.

And sometimes, Father, nobody had to say anything at all. We looked at what happened, looked at ourselves, and created our own label…

I simply want to keep walking closely enough with You that, little by little, my life begins to answer to the name You call me.

Amen

My quote from years ago. It’s posted at the top of my journal, but only now did I pause to read it.

What’s the story that inspired it? I’ve got a few. Worrying about tomorrow? Don’t.

@davidbhutchens, The Storytelling Leader (literally, his company name) inspired a quote out of me. His purpose-driven storytelling supports folks who need to be seen, whether they are in shelters or office cubicles. Check out profile.

I’m proud to call David a friend and fellow storytelling champion.
