A message for those, and the parents of those, that DO NOT HAVE to live with or manage food allergies..

When my sister died from her food allergy in 2018 at the age of 30, I did a media tour across Canada for food allergy awareness — this segment with Toronto’s @CP24BreakingNews & @ShanelleKaul to discuss the topic of #FOODALLERGIES in your #backtoschool preparations — snack and lunch preparations, adherence of the allergen restrictions in schools, and bullying.

We at @FATEInitiative know there’s a heck of a lot more to be aware of this year, but that doesn’t mean dropping your guard on everything else, including #foodallergy.

And always a major show of gratitude to my friend and producer @StaceMunro for always giving me opportunities to share this message.

8 years today. The 8th day of the 8th month.

For those that don't know, this is my sister, Joanna.
She died eating her favourite dessert.

Eight years ago today was the last morning she woke up to see the sun rise. August 8, 2018 still feels like yesterday — we relive it, to the minute, every single day.

The timeline went this way:
4:00pm — She finishes a day's work.
5:00pm — She and her partner Marc go for dinner. A regular occasion.
7:00pm — They stop at Whole Foods to try a new version of her favourite dessert. Vegan mochi... but unknowingly made with cashew milk.
8:30pm — She comes home to decompress and have dessert alongside us. I was home visiting from LA.

9:14pm — I call 911. Joanna is unconscious from anaphylaxis. Our mother is doing CPR, trying to keep her heart going.

This isn't a morbid recount. It's a reality check on how lethal food allergies are.

Even if it doesn't affect you directly, it touches someone — your family, your circle, your job. That's why we retell this story again and again through ➡️ @FATEInitiative ⬅️ so no other family has to live what we did.

8 years. 8 things you can do moving forward:

1. Ask before you serve. Every time. Like they do at restaurants.
2. Read the label, even on food you've bought before.
3. Know where the epinephrine is, or who to get it from.
4. Learn to recognize anaphylaxis. It doesn't always look like a rash.
5. Use epinephrine first, then call 911. Never wait to see if it gets better.
6. Believe someone when they tell you they have an allergy.
7. Ask your kids' school about their emergency plan.
8. Tell the people you love that you love them.

She died eating her favourite dessert. Think about that. Then think about the people you love who have food allergies — the next time your family gathers, the next time you go out to eat.

Tonight, and the rest of this month, we remind ourselves how valuable life is, and that time with the people who matter most is the only thing that actually counts.

As Joanna would say, "approach everything with love."

Part 2: Another family is sharing their near death experience after a mother says her 18-year-old daughter had an allergic reaction after eating a cookie that contained nuts from Crumbl Cookies.
Do you think companies need to have better food labelling?

As many of you know, my sister, Joanna, died eating her favourite dessert — it’s hard to believe it’s how much time has passed since then.

Today, would be the very last time she would have woken up to see the sun rise.

August 8, 2018 still feels like yesterday and we relive what happened, to the minute, every single day of our lives.

4:00pm-ish
She gets off from a day’s work

5:00pm-ish
Her and partner Marc, go for a lovely dinner — a regular occassion

7:00pm-ish
They go to Whole Foods to buy her favourite dessert, new to Whole Foods at the time (mochi, vegan — made with cashew milk)

8:30pm-ish
Joanna comes home to decompress and have dessert along side us — I happened to be home visiting from LA at the time

9:14pm
I call 911, Joanna has lost consciousness from anaphylaxis, as our mother administers CPR to try to keep her heart pumping

This is not meant to be morbid recount, but rather, a harsh reality check at how lethal FOOD ALLERGIES are.
Even if it doesn’t affect you directly, it likely affects you in other ways, whether it’s part of your job to be aware, someone in your family or your circle of friends... It feels so fresh because we have made it our job and our purpose to retell this story, again and again with our non-profit ➡️ @FATEInitiative, ⬅️ so that no one else has to live what we and so many other families have had to endure.

My sister, Joanna, died eating her favourite dessert. Think about that.

Now, take a moment and think about the people in your family that have food allergies and the next time your family gathers for a party, the next time you go out to eat.

As we reflect tonight and the rest of this month on our lives without her, we remind ourselves how valuable LIFE is and that, time spent with the people that mean the most to us is the very most important thing in life — there is so much truth to the phrase: “People are sometimes so busy with life, that they forget to live...”

Tell the people you love that you love them, every single day and as Joanna would say, “approach everything with love..” and we do, now.

Today is 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆: A global day of awareness for #FoodAllergy. In memory of #OakleyDebbs, whose favourite thing in the world were his red chucks.

Oakley was only 11 when he died in front of his family from his food (tree nut) allergy in 2016. He ate a piece of cake that, unknowingly contained walnut. This is a story all too familiar for too many families, including ours.

When my sister, Joanna, died in 2018 from her food allergy, in a nearly identical scenario to Oakley, I had no idea I would be introduced to SO MANY OTHER FAMILIES that literally shared the same tragedy.
I went to the Debbs’ home state of Florida in 2019 to meet them. We shared our stories, and we banded together with other food allergy organizations, connected by our stories and pain, to share our tragedies as a way to spread a much needed awareness for something that is so commonplace, but something people know so little of.

Today, #RedSneakersDay is a global and annual tradition, following many previous years of fundraising, awareness and education by the @RedSneakersForOakley foundation. We join in their initiatives to raise awareness for an epidemic that affects 1 in 3 children, and is affecting more adults today than ever before.

And this year, our organization @FATEinitiative will leap forward as a leader in real world training and education for food allergy, being offered at zero cost, with the support of the allergy community and local and international sponsors and partners.

We do this for Oakley, Elijah, Joanna, Andrea, Natasha, Giovanni, Nessie and all who have died from a lack of awareness to food allergy.

What really happens during anaphylaxis?

@JoeySalmingo knows that understanding food allergies can sometimes be a bit overwhelming and in some cases, confusing — it’s all about the language that’s used. We take a very realistic approach when relaying information, ESPECIALLY to people who have no idea what food allergies are or how dangerous they can be.

Simplifying explanations for a better understanding is our goal here, to make sure there’s no confusion about what’s happening and how to react to it.

Joey aims to incorporate, strategy into preventative safety measures, life saving tactics and general procedure in allergy cognizance in the workplace for restaurants. That makes for an empowered staff that’s more confident and caring of allergic individuals.

Remember, FATE stands for Food Allergy Training & Education and that's exactly what we intend to do. Train & Educate.

IT’S NOT THE ALLERGY COMMUNITY WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE OUR MESSAGE TO.
It’s everyone else.
