POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
August 25, 2018 — 4:43pm

Eight years ago today, my sister Joanna died from eating her favourite dessert. An allergic reaction to something familiar, made with unfamiliar ingredients, set in a display with insufficient labelling. Crazy.

The timestamp on this first photo would reflect seventeen days after she was admitted, this is the very last time would see her.

She was wheeled through these doors, down a short hallway, into an operating room where a team of surgeons were waiting.

At the same time, five other operating rooms across the province were on standby.

This is where we packed up the last seventeen days.

I lived in that cot.
I went home for an hour every afternoon to shower, then back to her bedside for the other twenty-three.

Every chime.
Every beep.
Every PA announcement.
Every nurse.
Every doctor.
Every custodian.
Every visitor.
Every pillow.
Every blanket.
Every word.

Every second at her bedside — still vivid. Like it was yesterday.

Seventeen days I still don’t have a word for.

August 26, 2018 — 7:41pm

Just over twenty-four hours later.

A message from our liaison at Trillium Gift of Life.

Four of Joanna’s five organs were transplanted into four people who had been waiting.

Including her heart.

That’s the one I keep coming back to. Her heart is still beating. Somewhere out there, eight years later.

Of course I think about these people. How could I not. I think about how long they sat on that list. I think about how they felt when the phone rang. I think about how they’re doing today.

This is their anniversary too.

Three hours after that message.

I take this photo of the full moon that night.
A full moon in Pisces.

Joanna was a Pisces.

I know the world doesn’t revolve around us..
But standing there that night, looking up — fucking crazy.

Like it was yesterday... crazy.

Eight years. And I still can’t tell you why it feels like it happened last night.

Some of it is what you’d expect.
Some of it isn’t.

Her old phone number belongs to someone else now.
Her email bounces.
Her Instagram is gone — deactivated for sitting inactive too long.

8 years today. The 8th day of the 8th month.

For those that don't know, this is my sister, Joanna.
She died eating her favourite dessert.

Eight years ago today was the last morning she woke up to see the sun rise. August 8, 2018 still feels like yesterday — we relive it, to the minute, every single day.

The timeline went this way:
4:00pm — She finishes a day's work.
5:00pm — She and her partner Marc go for dinner. A regular occasion.
7:00pm — They stop at Whole Foods to try a new version of her favourite dessert. Vegan mochi... but unknowingly made with cashew milk.
8:30pm — She comes home to decompress and have dessert alongside us. I was home visiting from LA.

9:14pm — I call 911. Joanna is unconscious from anaphylaxis. Our mother is doing CPR, trying to keep her heart going.

This isn't a morbid recount. It's a reality check on how lethal food allergies are.

Even if it doesn't affect you directly, it touches someone — your family, your circle, your job. That's why we retell this story again and again through ➡️ @FATEInitiative ⬅️ so no other family has to live what we did.

8 years. 8 things you can do moving forward:

1. Ask before you serve. Every time. Like they do at restaurants.
2. Read the label, even on food you've bought before.
3. Know where the epinephrine is, or who to get it from.
4. Learn to recognize anaphylaxis. It doesn't always look like a rash.
5. Use epinephrine first, then call 911. Never wait to see if it gets better.
6. Believe someone when they tell you they have an allergy.
7. Ask your kids' school about their emergency plan.
8. Tell the people you love that you love them.

She died eating her favourite dessert. Think about that. Then think about the people you love who have food allergies — the next time your family gathers, the next time you go out to eat.

Tonight, and the rest of this month, we remind ourselves how valuable life is, and that time with the people who matter most is the only thing that actually counts.

As Joanna would say, "approach everything with love."

Every. Single. Day.
