What does it take for a Nigerian business to compete confidently on the global stage?

On day 2 of the 11th FATE Business Conference, our keynote speaker: @taradurotoye, Founder House of Tara shared insights on what it really takes for Nigerian businesses to move beyond local markets and compete globally.

With the conference theme, “Beyond Borders: Transforming MSMEs for Global Competitiveness,” the conversation highlighted a simple but critical reality: going global is not just about entering new markets. It is about building a thriving business that is ready to meet global standards while surviving!

Some of the key takeaways from the session:

• As you are building your business remember that your business is not all your life, there is more to you than that business
• Build succession as a culture in your business.
• Identify and document what makes your customers come back, then standardize and then scale
• Take your eyes away from survival to thriving.

Nigeria is well positioned to serve the world. But unlocking that opportunity requires MSMEs to think beyond expansion and focus on building businesses that can consistently meet the expectations of global markets.

For Nigerian MSMEs looking to go global, which of these areas requires the most attention today: quality, people, systems, finance, or brand?

“Global excellence begins when excellence becomes your regular system.”

That was one of the key messages from the first keynote session at the 11th FATE Business Conference.

Segun Ogunsanya, Chairman of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), explained what it really takes for Nigerian businesses to move beyond local markets and compete globally.

With the conference theme, “Beyond Borders: Transforming MSMEs for Global Competitiveness,” the conversation highlighted a simple but critical reality: going global is not just about entering new markets. It is about building a business that is ready to meet global standards.

Some of the key takeaways from the session:

• Keep your books like someone will buy your business: Strong financial records are fundamental to building a credible, scalable business.
• Use technology deliberately: Technology should solve real business problems and strengthen how the business operates.
• Build your brand intentionally: Your brand is your promise to your stakeholders, and quality is what keeps customers coming back.

Nigeria is well positioned to serve the world. But unlocking that opportunity requires MSMEs to think beyond expansion and focus on building businesses that can consistently meet the expectations of global markets.

For Nigerian MSMEs looking to go global, which of these areas requires the most attention today: quality, people, systems, finance, technology, or brand?

Some moments deserve to be remembered.

Our EEP (Emerging Entrepreneurs Programme) Cohort 36 close-out brought together entrepreneurs who had spent months learning, challenging their thinking, building new connections and strengthening their businesses.

From the classroom to the conversations, every part of the journey added something to the experience.

Now, as we look back at these moments, we celebrate not just the end of a programme, but the growth that continues beyond it.
