🕯️ After Dark — Episode 2

Today we’re talking about Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield: a haunting story about love, grief, and the horror of losing someone who’s still right in front of you. 🌊

Obviously I couldn’t mention every author who helped shape the horror genre in one video, so this is very much just the beginning 🕯️

Throughout October, After Dark is going beyond just reading horror books. We’re getting into the history of the genre, its subgenres, themes, authors, adaptations, and basically all the things that make horror so interesting to me.

Welcome to After Dark, where we turn the pages on the darker side of literature. 🕯️📚

A very random little summer photo dump because apparently I have reached the point where my camera roll is just a collection of books, coffee, sunny days, and completely random moments.

This summer has mostly been about reading, making book content, and getting way too emotionally invested in the Cosmere. I finally started my Cosmere journey and somehow ended up spending a very significant portion of my summer in the Stormlight Archive. I’ve only read the first three books so far, but let me tell you, that was already enough to consume my brain completely. 😭

Between The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance and Oathbringer, I have had SO many thoughts. Characters I love, characters I absolutely cannot stand, theories, worldbuilding to obsess over, and approximately one million things I need to discuss with someone immediately.

And honestly, I think that is what I have been loving most about this account lately. I started it because I wanted somewhere to talk about books, but I never expected to enjoy actually making book content this much. I love having discussions with you guys, hearing different opinions, discovering books through your recommendations, and occasionally coming here to rant about a fictional character who has personally offended me. 😂

I feel like this little corner of the internet has become such a fun part of my life, and I’m genuinely so happy I get to share all of my reading adventures with you.

Anyway, here is what my summer has looked like lately: books, sunshine, random little moments, and a LOT of Cosmere brainrot. ☀️📖

What have you guys been reading this summer? #bookstagram #fantasy by @fatmazarchives

Just finished Words of Radiance and I fear Brandon Sanderson has permanently altered my brain chemistry. Journey before destination… onto the next Cosmere book. 📚✨

People often ask me how I became more “critical” when reading, and the truth is… I didn’t wake up one day knowing how to analyze books.

It came from reading a lot. From loving books that completely swept me away, being disappointed by others, rereading favorites, comparing stories, and slowly noticing patterns. Over time, I stopped asking, “Did I enjoy this?” and started asking, “Why did I enjoy it?” or “Why didn’t this work for me?”

I’m still reading for fun first and foremost, but I’ve learned that being a more critical reader has only made me appreciate great speculative fiction even more.

These aren’t universal rules they’re simply the things I personally pay attention to when reviewing fantasy and other speculative fiction. I’d love to know what criteria you use when you’re reading! 📚📚📚📚

I don’t usually reread books this quickly, but this one never really left me. The audiobook completely broke me, and somehow I knew I needed to experience it all over again in physical form.

I also happened to be listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s new album while reading it, and I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever separate the two. She literally wrote those songs for them 🥹🤍

AJ and Noah will haunt me forever I fear 🤍😭

Satire doesn’t have to be funny. Sometimes its purpose is to criticize, expose contradictions, and make us uncomfortable.

Using Yellowface and Yesteryear as case studies, let’s talk about why unlikeable protagonists can still make for great books. 📚✨

❓Do you need to like a protagonist to enjoy a book?

📚 Yesteryear- Caro Claire Burke

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay, I’m not going to lie, I went into this one with pretty low expectations. These days, whenever a book gets a lot of hype, I automatically become a little skeptical. But honestly? This one delivered.

One of my biggest fears was that it would be one of those books with an incredible premise that completely falls apart in the execution. You know the type: amazing concept, disappointing plot, and an ending that feels rushed or unsatisfying. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. The story was well thought out, the mystery kept me guessing, and the last 100 pages were packed with twists that genuinely surprised me. Every reveal made me question everything I thought I knew, which is exactly what I want from a suspense novel. So yes, I absolutely recommend picking this one up.

Now you’re probably asking, “Fatma, if you liked it so much, why are you only giving it three stars?” Well, this is where my personal preferences come into play because otherwise this wouldn’t be a book review, would it? 😅

The beginning was incredibly strong. From the very first pages, I was hooked and desperate to know where the story was going. But somewhere in the middle, I found myself struggling, and the main reason was Natalie.

I know she’s intentionally written to be unlikeable, and trust me, the author succeeded. Natalie is a bitch. The problem is that, for me, unlikeable characters still need something that keeps me invested. Maybe it’s a glimpse of vulnerability, a redeeming quality, or simply a fascinating character arc. With Natalie, I rarely felt that connection. There were moments when I understood her motivations, but I never truly cared about her as a person.

Because so much of the novel relies on spending time in her head, the middle section started to drag for me. I wasn’t invested enough in Natalie herself, and while the mystery remained interesting, it wasn’t always enough to completely compensate for that disconnect. I also felt that some parts of the middle could have been a little tighter, as the pacing occasionally slowed before picking up again toward the end.
