After a couple of months break, I’ve managed to finally get back on the train and have my first review for 2026. I’ve wound back the clock to a 2021 release though, after I was lucky enough to stumble upon this book at the recent Lifeline Book Fair.

Wandi is the true story of an alpine dingo who captured the hearts of many people around the world. Young Wandi is busy learning the tricks of the wild from his mama when he is suddenly snatched by a giant eagle, taken far away and then eventually dropped near a suburban backyard - injured, scared and alone. He longs for home, snug with his brothers and sisters, near his mama’s soft tail, in their safe den. But soon he is interacting with the tall animal that walks on two legs. The one his parents warned him about. The human. And thus begins his journey back to full health, rejoined with other dingos and suddenly very famous. But will he ever reunite with his own family or will he have to start a new family of his own?

I’m very late to the party on this one, but I’m a complete sucker for animal books, particularly ones about dogs, and I finished this in one sitting.
This was a delicate story and Favel has done a marvellous job. She beautifully captured the perspective of Wandi the dingo - the fear, the uncertainty, the loss of belonging, the curiosity. You can feel her knowledge and passion for Wandi come through the pages, and can easily tell the research and personal experiences that went into this book to capture such perspective.
It really was a fascinating insight into these intelligent and much maligned creatures. I learnt a lot. Did you know dingoes can hear a human heartbeat from 25m?

Thanks Favel for writing this book and bringing attention to such brilliant animals.

Our Queen KImmi passed away this week - under the last full moon of the year. Everyone @dingodiscovery is absolutely devastated and the sanctuary will never be the same. No dingo ever came close to Kimmi’s speed, intelligence and climbing prowess. Sometimes looking into her eyes was like understanding the entire universe. To be near her was to be in the presence of greatness. I’m so grateful to have been lucky enough to have known her for the past 5 years. Run free, my Queen by @favelparrett

It’s very hard to articulate what it means to me to see this play right near where I signed a book deal with @hachetteaus and @vanradd19 nearly 15 years ago. What @archipelago_productions and @julian.augustus have done with my book is incredible. I’ve cried and laughed through 8 performances and it never gets old. Thank you to all the teachers who teach my book. Thank you to Ben Winspear for you brilliance and kindness. Thank you to Julian for writing a killer adaptation.
