One for Sorrow – Favel Parrett ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have read and absolutely loved every book Favel Parrett has published, and this one was no exception. In fact, I love teaching Past the Shallows every year, and will never tire of reading about Miles & Harry.

For this one, I knew I’d connect with it from the get go. I’ve always loved books set during WWII. There’s something about them that I feel really connected to. The stories of ordinary people, the love, the loss, the heartbreak and the choices people had to make. I’m always drawn to them. Add in occupied Norway and I was immediately sold.

Parrett’s characters are always incredible. They’re flawed and you can feel all their longing, their love, their heartbreak and betrayal. She has this beautiful way of writing that makes you feel as if they’re real.

I also loved that she mentions Ernest Hemingway in this book, because I absolutely love his writing. And I actually think she writes a lot like him. There’s a simplicity to her writing, where she doesn’t need to say too much to make you feel so much. I think that’s such a gift.

She is honestly a wordsmith and, in my opinion, one of Australia’s most underrated writers.

You’ll cry, as expected. But my goodness, it’s beautifully written. ❤️

Thank you to @netgalley for this fabulous advanced copy. It’ll make an excellent bookish gift for Xmas - it’s our early November, so add it to your Xmas gift shopping list!
