Tanner Jones. This guy can get loose with the best of 'em but I also rely on him to help keep things buttoned up at @paradoxsports and Adaptive Climbers Fest. His kiddos rely on him to be an amazing father. @lnbader relies on him to carry the Baby Beluga karaoke duet. From Denver and Ouray to Kentucky to Alaska and beyond, he's been one of my closest and most trusted adventure pals, a colleague, and a friend (brother, really).

Recently he broke @adaptiveclimbersfest 's 2nd rule (don't change categories) in a near fatal car accident while dodging an elk in Evergreen and could use some community support. @lpizzski and @tinomartirano have started a GoFundMe for anyone who is able to toss a little love his way. The link is in my bio. Anything helps and I'll give you a forehead kiss the next time I see you. by @fearthenbeer

Took a page from @santi.summits and @sfarver01's recent video and figured I'd share my buildout for the Tour de Franks ride happening tomorrow. I feel like it's rare to match comfort and performance so perfectly and I'm really happy with how this rig turned out.

If you're unfamiliar with the Tour de Franks, it's a 100mi bike ride through Denver to all 10 Costco foodcourts with a world famous $1.50 Costco hotdog eaten at each stop for extra challenge. Rowdy and ridiculous and supporting a great cause... what's not to love?!

If you enjoy this video please consider donating to my rider page (link in bio) in support of @paradoxsports and the mission of transforming lives and communities through adaptive climbing opportunities that defy convention. by @fearthenbeer

Yesterday I climbed a mile for my 53rd birthday. The push began before sunrise and ended after sunset.

I climbed and downclimbed the Third Flatiron, Second Flatiron, First Flatironette, Direct East Face + Fandango on the First Flatiron, and Sunset Flatiron. Then I relocated to Eldorado Canyon and climbed the first 3 pitches of the Yellow Spur before being chased off by a thunderstorm. The day wrapped up (after some more rain) with some pitches in Boulder Canyon.

Thanks to my Flatirons team: Josh Tukman, Andrew Megas-Russell @megas_sends, and Sam Sala @fearthenbeer. My Eldo partner, @brady_robinson (so happy we bailed when we did), and everyone who turned out for a wet evening at Castle Rock!

I was working to raise $15,000 for the amazing adaptive climbers at Paradox. We’re still short a little bit. If you can chip in, even a little, the fundraiser is still open until midnight tonight: https://go.rallyup.com/alex53\ (link in bio)

I recommend taking on something like this if you want a memorable birthday! Thanks to all of you who supported me and Paradox!

On my absolute best racing days, I was nothing more than a blurry body and flash of red in the background, far behind the top riders of the time but damn I had fun racing this warship... and even more fun explaining it to curious MTB lovers. In my opinion, Tibor Fischl and Scott Strom built one of the most unique, and frankly, effin' beautiful bikes of all-time. In 93, I was fortunate enough to be racing around the west coast a year after the Crosstrac brand was born in the tiny northern Californian town of Occidental. I was in love the second I laid eyes on this bike and made it my life's mission to own one. In 94 I was beside myself when I finally spec'd out this beauty and it was delivered to my local bike shop. Thousands of miles aboard that blue saddle, soaked in sweat and blood saw me to many crashes, a few podiums and a lifetime of two wheeled memories in between. Our final journey together was in 09 on the Kokopelli with Spicy Dave.

Flash forward to a month ago, and me trying to find a fitting home to a long-retired race horse; too much effort to revive, but way too cool to scrap or give away to any old cause. A Google search for 1993 Crosstrac Sonoma brought me to a few pictures of a beautiful yellow Sonoma owned by Chuck. I found him on Instagram and reached out via cold call DM to see if he'd be interested in taking mine for parts or rebuilding it as it seemed he has a knack for. He said he'd take it and make it a project for he and his daughter. A few days later, I was blown away when he let me know it would be refurbished by him and Shiloh then sent to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in Marin, CA.

After a few weeks of their immaculate cleaning and wrenching, it's surreal to see the exact bike I spent so many hours of my life on get the star treatment and a well-deserved shelf in living history.

Thank you to the legendary Joe Breeze for being stoked on my humble contribution to the legacy of MTB and a HUGE thank you to Chuck and Shiloh for crushing this resto and bringing this bike back to life in a way I never could have dreamt of doing. I can't wait to come visit the museum to see it -and the rest of the collection- in person. by @fearthenbeer

About as close to ivy league as this guy will ever get.

The Harvard route did not disappoint. My climbing did. From the jump, I was in a terrible headspace that required a ton of fake-it-til-you-make-it to keep going up. Near the top of The Spiral, Doc Malone finally got my stoke up and pulled me back into the fight. I repaid her by demolishing her with snow and ice for an hour while I was groveling my way up the almost completely filled in 5.9 chimney. Off balance and techy mixed is my jam and this pitch was beautifully stocked with ample weirdness. A tipped out #3 above a manky fixed pin about half way through gave me just enough confidence to plow a path to the "awkward chockstone" and what would be the final technical difficulty of our day.

Two full body lengths of hacking and clearing refrigerator-thick mushroom later, I pulled up a few armloads of rope and ran out of talent, botching a high clip and blowing feet. 35' and a few bounces later I found myself hanging sideways at the bottom of the pitch, dizzy and ears ringing, lower back tweaked and both hands numb from bashing nerves in my elbows on the way down. Connected to my belay loop, a snapped leash with only one tool still attached.

I jugged back up the line to collect my other tool and reset for another go but found nothing except the rock and ice I had ping-ponged past a few minutes earlier... and like that our attempt was over.

The disappointment is real this year. Disappointment that I let my partner down; that I let myself down; that I let the route down. These things happen though, and I've taken the past few weeks to find gratitude where I can.

I'm grateful to have finally touched the route and to have felt the heavy history of it in person. I'm grateful to have an actual feel for what this rig takes, both physically and mentally. Most of all, I'm grateful I'm able to say I'll be back for another round in the future.

IDK, maybe it's not that deep, but in my opinion Huntington is almost perfection and no matter what route points you toward the top, it demands the same. taken in Denali National Park and Preserve by @fearthenbeer

Bittersweetly celebrating @ourayicepark closing day and another awesome season of ice climbing with an OIP Staff appreciation post!

HUGE THANK YOU to every one of you who keep this amazing venue running each year. This place is magic and the folks behind the scenes deserve a ton of credit. Corey, Christina, Mattsquatch, Timmy, Sarah, Landon, Top Matt, Wolverine, Zoe, Ryan, Nicole, Peter (sorry to anyone I may have missed!)

First 5 seconds of the video is @lnbader smiling as she pulls into the sunlight from the shadowy depths below during a fun lap at Ice Fest. The rest of the video is a few of the OIP's finest puttin' in work to assist a wheelchair climber up and out of the ditch after a day on the ice with @paradoxsports. Our program quite literally could not run without the support of the Ouray Ice Park and its staff. If you climb at the park (even once a season) consider making a donation, or better yet buy a membership! to show them that support goes both ways 🤜🤛

It's free to climb in the park, but it ain't free to run the thing... so do the right thing. taken in Ouray Ice Park by @fearthenbeer

RIP Alpine Ninja Frog. Thank you Kurt, for being a friend, mentor, and brother. From the minute we met in the Seattle airport, teammates laid over en route to our first AK expedition, I knew we'd get along perfectly. The effect that trip had on me could not have been a more formative experience and it'll be forever ingrained in my soul. Your kindness, patience and genuine love of what we were out there doing helped ease my nerves as we quested off into the scariest thing I'd done to date. The quiet support of that team was exactly what I needed to get into the rhythm of Alaskan climbing and although our trip didn't end with a summit, it ended safely and with all four of us bonded in a way only wild places can provide.

I'll miss sharing a rope with you, running into you at climbing fests, late night life-chats in your kitchen and getting personal tours of the San Juan's "finest" rock with you.

Love you, dude 🖤🖤🖤 by @fearthenbeer

Finally home and decompressing after a couple weeks of running hard and wanted to give this guy a huge shoutout. Adam F*cking Danger Conrad Payne, you're a legend 🤘😆🤘

Anyone who knows Adam, knows his determination and fire to live every experience he can to the fullest. They also know of his often audacious goals and his ability to pull friends into the ridiculousness of it all. I'm forever grateful to have gotten an invite to the team and to have played a role in your first Zion experience. I hope we made it as memorable for you as it was for us, dude!

Nothing but love to you and the rest of the Payne Trayne team (Gary, Nate, Shipp and JB, y'all were the best team I could possibly imagine to do this with).

Also, huge thanks to @paradoxsports and @cafoundation for the financial support, @junktownguides for an awesome ledge to hang our asses off of, and @unitedairlines and #mamaPayne for the logistics and airline miles that made getting this whole crew together possible. taken in Zion National Park by @fearthenbeer
