Families are budgeting, cutting costs and stretching each paycheck. But sometimes, even that isn’t enough. SNAP helps families stay nourished and keeps communities strong. 🥗

Yet, recent changes to the program may impact people’s access to SNAP in PA. We need your help to tell Congress to support a 2-year delay in the SNAP cost shift so families can continue receiving reliable food assistance without disruption. As food and grocery prices continue to rise, more and more Pennsylvanians are struggling to afford enough food on the table for their families.

In a recent PennLive article by Daniel Urie, local leaders and food banks highlight the growing impact of affordability challenges and reduced food assistance, forcing working families, seniors, and neighbors across our state to seek help just to get the nutrition they need.

Our network of food banks remains committed to supporting Pennsylvanians as demand continues to surge. But we can't do it alone—together, we must speak up for our neighbors to help ensure they have the food they need to thrive.

For our final installment of October's "Apples in Action" highlight series, we are heading to Monroe County to celebrate Gould’s Produce 🍏

Co-owners Russell and Denise Gould personally deliver fresh apples to the Christ Episcopal Church Food Pantry in Stroudsburg, where a grocery-style choice system preserves dignity and minimizes food waste. Their apples also support the “Blessings in a Backpack” program, ensuring kids have fresh food over the weekend.

"Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to neighbors because they can be so costly in the store," remarks Debby Campbell, the pantry's Co-Director.

Thank you to Gould's Produce and all of our incredible orchard partners for making this series possible! Read the full story about Gould's Produce at feedingpa.org/newsroom/goulds-produce or by going to our link in bio. by @feedingpa

As food needs rise, relationships between farms and food banks like the one between Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest PA and John Schultz and Sons Quality Fruit serve as more than just a supply chain—they are a vital source of fresh, nutritious produce for our neighbors 🍎

The farm is one of the last apple producers in northwestern Pennsylvania that supplies wholesale quantities of fruit. "We have been able to consistently supply Second Harvest with quality fruit throughout our season," says owner Roger Schultz. "We have partnered with Second Harvest for many years. During this time, we have donated, been a vendor, helped establish community locations/outreach, and communicated with others for funding and support."

We are grateful to producers like John Schultz and Sons Quality Fruit for continuing to partner with regional food banks to provide locally grown and produced products to our neighbors facing hunger.

Feeding PA’s Director of Public Policy Ryan Prater, joined Sen. Lindsey Williams, Sen. Nick Pisciottano and Sen. Judy Schwank at a press conference to offer real-world legislative solutions to rising grocery prices.

Every Pennsylvanian deserves access to the food they need to thrive. But every year, the number of neighbors turning to food banks continues to rise. At the same time, our network is being asked to do more with less, as federal policy changes, including implementation of H.R. 1 and a decrease in federally-supported food for food banks, have increased pressure on families and the charitable food system.

"Across our network, food banks and food pantries report steady price increases in popular food staples,” remarked Prater. “Ground beef costs 42% more than it did in 2021, green beans cost 22% more, and corn costs 17% more. Not only are Pennsylvanians struggling to afford these products at the grocery store, but now food banks are struggling to stock them on pantry shelves."

We are grateful to @senwilliamspa, @senpisciottano and @senjudyschwank for bringing attention to this critical issue and championing solutions that keep food on the table for every Pennsylvanian.

Together, we can ensure no family has to choose between paying their bills and feeding their families. Learn more about our policy priorities at feedingpa.org/advocacy. by @feedingpa

🌱For over 40 years, the Beinlich family has welcomed families and guests to Triple B Farms in Monongahela— just 15 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

The Beinlichs enjoy sharing their harvests with members of their community, including through food bank partners in the charitable food system. The farm has been working with local food banks for 15 years.

“Being able to rely on [Triple B Farms] season after season is invaluable in helping us get more fresh produce to more of our neighbors," remarks Jane Olszewski, Manager of Procurement and Planning at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. "By delivering directly to the Food Bank from the farm, the team at Triple B ensures that the tomatoes and corn we distribute are as fresh as possible.”

🍎APPLES IN ACTION🍎

This October, we are thrilled to feature the dedicated Pennsylvania apple growers who partner with our network to supply fresh, locally grown apples to our neighbors facing hunger.

To kick off the series, we’re shining a light on Solebury Orchards, a staple in central Bucks County for over 40 years. The 80-acre orchard has been teaming up with the Bucks County Opportunity Council to ensure families across the region have access to local apples and fresh-pressed cider.

"Fresh produce is an important part of good nutrition, and it is gratifying to be a part of a production that serves the local community," says owner Brian Smith.

Feeding PA was thrilled to join our newest member, Chester County Food Bank, and Philabundance for a Community Food Forum focused on building a more food-secure Chester County. The event highlighted both the challenges facing our neighbors and the ways food banks and pantries, community partners, business leaders, farmers, elected officials, and neighbors can come together to build sustainable solutions to hunger.

Special thanks to the panelists for a thoughtful and honest conversation about the challenges families and food banks are facing today, and the opportunities we have to address them together.

Ending hunger takes all of us. Conversations like these strengthen the connections between our food banks and the communities they serve, creating opportunities to share ideas, build partnerships, and work together toward solutions that help our neighbors thrive. We’re proud to have Chester County Food Bank as part of the Feeding Pennsylvania network and look forward to continuing this work together. by @feedingpa
