A pretty special night in Annapolis and definitely a new one for me.

I was proud to attend an evening aboard USHER in support of the U.S.Sea Cadets, and even prouder to be there as a Trustee of the Sea Cadet Foundation Board and a Regional President of the Navy League.

Bringing together leaders from the Navy, Coast Guard, Navy League and the Sea Cadet community around one shared purpose, investing in the next generation of young Americans, made for a pretty special evening.

Thank you to our hosts, Michael Saylor and USHER, and to the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lt. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte, USMC,the Deputy Commandant of the Coast Guard, Vice Admiral Nathan Moore and Navy League CEO and former MCPON Mike Stevens and his wife Theresa, Sea Cadets Chair Sarah Higgins, and the many others who show up for this amazing youth program. And as always thank you to Lynn Atkinson for her indisputable support of the young men and women in the Sea Cadets across this country.

And perhaps my favorite part, having Sea Cadets themselves there. They are the reason for the gathering.

Welcome to the fleet, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo 🇺🇸

On September 12, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo (WPC 1163) was officially commissioned in New York City.

Named in honor of FDNY firefighter and Coast Guard Reservist Jeffrey Palazzo, who was killed on September 11, 2001, this cutter will carry his name and legacy wherever she serves.

The New York Council Navy League was proud to sponsor this historic commissioning. Council President @james.p.spear and VP of Membership Norma Milio were honored to serve as committee chairs alongside an incredible commissioning committee.

A huge thank you to our Navy League volunteers and everyone who supports the New York Council. Your time, generosity and willingness to show up make opportunities like this possible.

We are also grateful to the @garysinisefoundation and the @intrepidmuseum for their support of this special occasion.

And now, the best part. USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo has a crew, a mission and a place in the fleet.

Congratulations to her officers and crew. We are proud to support you.

Months of planning led to this.

Yesterday, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo was officially commissioned into the United States Coast Guard in Manhattan.

Named for FDNY firefighter and Coast Guardsman Jeffrey Palazzo, who was killed on September 11, 2001, this cutter will carry his name and legacy forward.

I’m incredibly proud to have served on the commissioning committee and to have had a small part in such an important day.

Congratulations to the crew of USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo. We’ll be cheering you on from New York.

Some nights stay with you.

I grew up in New York. I remember September 11. And last night, looking back at my city from New York Harbor with the Tribute in Light above it, I had one of those moments where I thought, how did I get lucky enough to be part of this?

This weekend, the Coast Guard will commission USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo, named for a New Yorker who served both his city and his country. Jeffrey was an FDNY firefighter and Coast Guardsman who answered the call on September 11, 2001, and gave his life helping others.

Twenty-five years later, his name will go to sea.

Being part of the commissioning committee has made this incredibly personal for me. Last night, as Navy League Empire Region President, I had the privilege of helping welcome the crew, the Palazzo family, Coast Guard leadership, friends and supporters for an evening on New York Harbor.

Sharing the evening with Coast Guard leaders including ADM Jo-Ann Burdian, MCPOCG Heath Jones and RDML Matt Lake made an already meaningful night even more special.

But standing beneath those two beams of light, titles didn’t matter much. I was simply a New Yorker, looking at the city, thinking about Jeffrey Palazzo and the thousands of others who answered the call that day.

Tomorrow, a new Coast Guard cutter will carry his name.

What an extraordinary way to make sure we remember.
