Last day of summer. One busy season of putting our mission into action. 🇺🇸⚓️

For this Mission Monday, we’re looking back at a summer spent showing up for our Sea Services, supporting those who serve, strengthening our maritime community and advocating for a strong maritime nation.

A few of the places our mission took us this summer:

• Maritime Security Conference
• NTAG Empire State Change of Command
• Congressional Fly-In
• USS Patrick Gallagher crew visit
• Coast Guard Family Day at Sector New York
• Commissioning of USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo
• Enlisted of the Quarter awards across multiple units
• Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner at SUNY Maritime
• International Naval Review & Sail250

From Washington, D.C. to New York Harbor, from recognizing outstanding service members to welcoming crews and supporting the next generation, it was a summer filled with purpose.

And those are only the moments that made the carousel.

Summer may be ending. The mission isn’t. 🇺🇸⚓️

Welcome to the fleet, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo 🇺🇸

On September 12, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo (WPC 1163) was officially commissioned in New York City.

Named in honor of FDNY firefighter and Coast Guard Reservist Jeffrey Palazzo, who was killed on September 11, 2001, this cutter will carry his name and legacy wherever she serves.

The New York Council Navy League was proud to sponsor this historic commissioning. Council President @james.p.spear and VP of Membership Norma Milio were honored to serve as committee chairs alongside an incredible commissioning committee.

A huge thank you to our Navy League volunteers and everyone who supports the New York Council. Your time, generosity and willingness to show up make opportunities like this possible.

We are also grateful to the @garysinisefoundation and the @intrepidmuseum for their support of this special occasion.

And now, the best part. USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo has a crew, a mission and a place in the fleet.

Congratulations to her officers and crew. We are proud to support you.

Last night, the New York Council Navy League had the honor of welcoming the crew, families and friends of USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo for a special evening on New York Harbor ahead of her commissioning.

We were honored to be joined by senior Coast Guard leadership, including VADM Jo-Ann Burdian, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Heath Jones, and RDML Matt Lake, as we celebrated the crew and families who will bring this cutter to life.

Jeffrey Palazzo was both an FDNY firefighter and a Coast Guardsman. On September 11, 2001, he answered the call and gave his life while responding at the World Trade Center. His courage, service and devotion to others will now be carried forward by the cutter that bears his name.

Sailing through New York Harbor on the eve of September 11 made that legacy especially meaningful. An evening like this takes a team. Our sincere thanks to @garysinisefoundation , @citycruises ,Bollinger Shipyards, Rolls-Royce and Hose-McCann Communications for helping us give the crew and their families a New York welcome worthy of this moment. We would also like to thank all of our members and generous donors over the years. Your support of our council ensures that we can make events like this happen.

Welcome to New York, USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo. We are proud to support you and proud to be part of this historic commissioning. Semper Paratus ⚓️

This week, New York remembers.

25 years after September 11, we are preparing to honor one of our own.

Jeffrey Palazzo was a Coast Guardsman, an FDNY firefighter, and a New Yorker who lost his life responding to the World Trade Center on 9/11.

On September 12, a new Coast Guard cutter bearing his name, the USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo, will be commissioned here in NYC.

Tomorrow, the New York Council Navy League will proudly kickoff this important event by welcoming the cutter’s crew, along with family and friends, for a special dinner cruise in New York Harbor. Thank you to our co-sponsors @garysinisefoundation @citycruises @intrepidmuseum

Membership is what makes the mission possible.

Every new member brings another voice, another connection and another person willing to show up for our sea services.

And here’s the thing. There’s no “type” of person who belongs in the Navy League.

Military connection? Great.
No military connection? Also great.
Love ships? We’ve got you.
Great at event planning? Fundraising? Advocacy? There’s a spot for you
Just want to get involved in something that matters? Come on in.

The New York Council is growing, and we’d love to have you grow with us.

Did you know the Navy League’s story began right here in New York? ⚓️🗽

In 1902, prominent New Yorkers gathered at the New York Yacht Club with a shared concern: America needed to be better prepared for its growing role on the world stage. With the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt, these early efforts helped establish the Navy League of the United States.

From the outset, the Navy League was a civilian organization dedicated to building public understanding and support for America’s Sea Services.

That mission expanded over time. In 1922, the Navy League helped establish Navy Day, and in 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed Navy League gatherings nationwide with a simple rallying call:

“If you can’t join the Navy, join the Navy League.”

More than 120 years later, we are still carrying that mission forward here in New York—and we need people like you to continue it.

Because supporting our Sea Services isn’t just history. It’s impact. It’s advocacy. It’s making sure those who serve at sea are seen, supported, and strengthened by the nation they protect.

The people have changed. The world has changed. But the need for informed, engaged citizens has never been greater.

When you join the Navy League, you become part of a legacy that influences policy, supports sailors and Marines, and strengthens America’s maritime future.

Our history started here. Our mission continues here. And it continues with you.

Ready to step in and be part of it?

Did you know the Navy League supports a think tank dedicated to maritime strategy?

The Center for Maritime Strategy brings research, analysis and expertise to some of the most important issues facing America’s sea services and maritime future, from national security and geopolitics to shipbuilding, emerging technology and the maritime industrial base.

And this week, that mission is in action.

The Center is hosting its Congressional Maritime Intensive, bringing congressional staff together for three days focused on U.S. maritime power, national defense and strategic policy.

It’s another side of the Navy League mission you may not know about.

Supporting our sea services. Strengthening maritime power.

Did you know a ship’s commissioning is only the beginning?

Commissioning marks the moment a Navy ship or Coast Guard cutter officially enters active service. It is a tradition filled with history, pride and purpose.

For the New York Council, it also marks the beginning of a relationship.

We are proud to have supported the commissionings of USS New York, USS Cooperstown, USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr. and USCGC Vincent Danz, and to continue supporting their crews long after commissioning day.

Next, we look forward to welcoming USS Patrick Gallagher and USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo into service.

The ceremony may last a day. Our commitment to the crew continues. ⚓️🇺🇸

Want to be part of that commitment?

Join the New York Council and help us support the Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and families who serve our nation.

Today wasn’t just about celebrating the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard.

It was about recognizing the people who stand the watch every day. The men and women who protect our waterways, respond when called, and keep our communities safe.

It was also about the families who stand behind them, and the community that comes together to say thank you.

The Navy League of the United States, New York Council, is proud to support Coast Guard Day each year. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and an extra thank you to our incredible volunteers. Your time and dedication helped make today special.

Happy Coast Guard Day, and thank you for your service.

Every successful event starts with people who choose to help.

Volunteers welcome crews, support service members and families, mentor young leaders, take meetings with local leaders and build stronger connections between our communities and the Sea Services.

Their work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact lasts long after the event is over.

If you believe in supporting those who serve, there’s a place for you in the New York Council Navy League.

Join us and help support, educate, and advocate for the Sea Services.
