Felipe Schwager (@felipeschwager ) speaks about his brainchild, “Caravaggio × Berlinde De Bruyckere” - a fascinating exhibition and an artistic dialogue spanning 400 years - which he co-curated with Tjioe Meyer-Hecken (@tjioe.hecken) as a project of @offsite_arts at the Italian Embassy in Berlin (@italyingermany ).

I had the privilege of a conversation with Felipe about the making of this extraordinary project ten days ago - An art experience that keeps resonating, and one of my two favourite shows of Berlin Art Week (@berlinartweek ).

At its centre is Caravaggio’s „Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy“, painted around 1606 and long believed lost before resurfacing in 2014, brought into dialogue with a newly commissioned work by Berlinde De Bruyckere (@drongenhofkapel ). The project was initiated by Offsite Arts (@offsite_arts) in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Berlin.

What has fascinated me about Caravaggio since I first encountered his paintings as a teenager is their astonishing humanity and immediacy. There is no idealisation: there is pain, loneliness, the full weight and vulnerability of the human body - dirty feet, fingernails, flesh. Life as it is.

And this is precisely where De Bruyckere’s work enters into such a powerful, almost collaborative dialogue with him. Through wax, wood, textile and the wounded, transformed body, she responds across four centuries not by illustrating Caravaggio, but by meeting him on the terrain of vulnerability, suffering, desire and transcendence.

SOLITUDE (2024) is vol 2 of the performance HUNGRY (2023). It is a contemplation on body and its form; body as a kinetic sculpture, and performance as display. The live exhibition will focus on the notion of reshaping the body, artificiality of this act, yet the fascination around. Going back to the vigorous works of second wave feminists such as Valie Export, Carolee Schneeman, the live exhibition sees the posture as an archive and as sculpture, and delves into the cliches of gender and searches ways of transgressing it. taken in Tacheles, Berlin by @felipeschwager

“Untitled (Izanami)” is a film by Vanessa Beecroft featuring @biancacensori as Izanami and presented as an installation in which one set from the film becomes part of the work. The installation extends the film into physical space with five white plaster sculptures- Lying Body, Waist Fragment, Leg Fragment, Lying Torso Fragment, and Standing Torso Fragment-alongside a hospital bed, chair, and lamp. The film is inspired by Persephone’s descent into Hades and reimagined in a large, semi-abandoned hotel near Tokyo.
Set in Japan, yet echoing Greek myth, the film unfolds through ritual, confinement, and transformation, suggesting a final passage and identification through darkness.

Vanessa Beecroft (born 1969 in Genoa) is an artist working across performance, sculpture, photography, film, and installation, always embedded with sociopolitical critique. Since the 1990s, she has exhibited women through staged tableaux vivants and various media. Beecroft lives and works in Los Angeles. by @felipeschwager

3. The Vanishing of the Body
The aura as a temporal phenomenon is also revealed in the disappearance of the subjects. In Berlinde de Bruyckere's large, free-standing work “Mantel II” (2016-2018), such physical traces seem to have been left behind. The artist's work is often influenced by Christian or mythological iconography, with references to 16th-century wooden altarpieces and Baroque depictions of Saint Francis. Here, de Bruyckere subtly suggests a human silhouette with the nailed and draped fabric on the porous wallpaper and the dried wax in its grey-pink hue. The transience of physical existence always accompanies her works in a both uncanny and attractive way. - @freundart
