As we look back at our experience working with Ganavya and Felix, we imagine making space for more such commissions in the future.

Objects that begin with your story and that may only ever need to exist for you, and that allow us to give something deeply personal a physical form.

We have more to share on how this work fits alongside everything else we will be up to and how you can engage with us.

We got to be a small part of something very special with @ganavya and @felix_grimm.

As they were getting married, they imagined a gift for their friends and family: an Uruvam made from an imprint of their anatomical hearts.

An Uruvam is traditionally a metal sheet bearing the imprint of a body part, offered to a spirit in the hope that it will watch over and protect it. Ganavya and Felix wanted to hold that tradition a little differently. They wanted to offer their hearts to the people they loved, as their temple, and in doing so, ask them to protect their hearts.

When we first heard their idea, we were so moved by it that we knew we wanted to help bring it to life.

At the time, that was really all there was to it. We weren’t thinking about what it might become for Surmeyi, or whether we would ever do something like it again. It was simply a story that held so much meaning that we wanted to be a part of it.

But as we’ve been looking back at this year, and thinking about what we want Surmeyi to become in the years ahead, we keep coming back to this experience.

Perhaps because these are exactly the kinds of objects we want to make more room for. Objects that begin with someone’s story, that may only ever need to exist for them, and that allow us to use what we know how to do to give something deeply personal a physical form.

We didn’t know it then, but making this with Ganavya and Felix has now become part of how we’re imagining the future of Surmeyi. by @felix_grimm

11 yr old rarely asks for things that aren’t pasta, legos, pizza, cuddling, or time playing. In Fremantle, Australia, after staring at it for a while, he quietly asked for this sterling silver necklace. He accidentally left it behind in Byron Bay, and was devastated, his first tour loss— you never forget your first— but a call to the hotel, a kind lady who chose to find it and hold on to it, Shahzad’s friend who had come to the show who drove to the hotel to pick it up, who held on to it and then sent it via traveler heading to Berlin from Byron Bay, who miraculously landed five minutes away from the LEITER office. 11YO is already wearing it and whistling. May we never let go of this golden thread, may we never take it for granted. His first tour loss isn’t here yet. by @felix_grimm
