Becoming a parentified child doesn’t only happen in situations of extreme abuse or neglect. It can also happen in situations where a parent is chronically struggling with their own mental health or the symptoms of systemic trauma (such as having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and never being home to tend to your emotional or physical needs). This type of parentification is actually so common and under recognized as the trauma that it is on a child’s developing nervous system.

If this sounds like you, know that change is possible. Visit the link in bio and schedule a free, no-pressure consultation to see if working together feels like a good fit!

If any of these stories sound familiar, you don’t have to keep carrying them alone.

Somatic therapy doesn’t ask you to think your way out of shame. It works with your nervous system directly, so the old bracing can finally soften, and the parts of you that learned to hide can be met instead.

If you’re ready to stop arguing with the story and start coming home to your body, I’d love to work with you.

Soliciting client reviews as a therapist is a bit of a gray area due to confidentiality and other legal and ethical concerns. When a former client of mine offered to write a review and sent this one over (paraphrased here, and shared with permission) it just warmed my heart and filled me with gratitude for getting to witness and take part in these kinds of transformations!

I didn’t know if I was going to share any of this at all. I’ve spent literally all year preparing for this moment. So many very difficult, emotional conversations, and so many tears (many of them were mine lol).

I just burned my business to the ground.

It feels a little unreal still. I’m definitely right now feeling very sad about saying goodbye to many of my incredible clients. I don’t think people realize how deep the relational dynamic can be- it’s not a one way street (at least not with me).

I know it was the right decision, and it’s undoubtedly an exciting new chapter. I’d love to elaborate more on that when the time is right- but first, I’m honoring what is showing up for me now.

Sending so much love to all my clients- past, present, and future. You have impacted me more than you know just by being you, showing up for yourself authentically each week, allowing yourself to be seen and be vulnerable. It’s truly and honor to know you.

First, sadness. Then, we celebrate.

what an incredible weekend we just had at our 3rd Somatic Healing Retreat! 🤩 i left this retreat with my heart full and feeling SO inspired by the bravery and vulnerability all the participants showed up with! between the nourishing meals, time spent in nature, plenty of mindful movement, connection with others, and sharing the education and embodied practices i feel so lucky to have learned throughout my career… i’m just basking in the bliss of how it all came together! 😌✨ it wouldn’t have been nearly as powerful and potent if it weren’t for how willing the participants were to show up for themselves and for others as well! bless all your hearts! i’m so glad to have met you! 🫶🏼🥰💞🙏🏼🏔️xo Amy Williams

🙅🏼‍♀️ Talking about your feelings is not the same as feeling them.

🏃🏼‍♀️There is often a lot of fear and confusion around feelings- we don’t know how to feel them, we worry we will get lost or stuck in them, or maybe we’re concerned how it’s going to look to others if we express them.

🗣️ There are plenty of GOOD reasons we don’t let ourselves feel our feelings. We may mistakenly think we are feeling our feelings when we sit in talk therapy, tell sad stories, or vent to a friend. But the reality is emotions happen inside the body and are expressed THROUGH the body.

💗 We heal when we can be with what we feel. When we can be with emotions in our bodies through watching and tracking sensation as it moves through us, emotions metabolize from stuck and stagnant energy into vitality and life force, allowing us to get back to (or get to know for the first time) our authentic self.

👉🏼Looking for more guidance on exactly HOW to be with your feelings? Join me at the Somatic Healing Retreat this fall in the White Mountains! Click the link in bio for more info and to register!

It’s not about rewriting history- it’s about rewiring physiology.

You see, our nervous system doesn’t differentiate between past and present.

It’s why when we experience flashbacks, through mental imagery or emotional state, it feels like the overwhelming event from the past is STILL happening in the present.

So, I invite you to open yourself up to the possibility that there is a valuable purpose in reimagining an alternative ending to overwhelming, traumatic, or stressful events from your past.

Consider: If things could have gone differently, what might have been less stressful? 🤔

To truly access the benefit here we have to go deeper than the mind. Rather than simply imagining an alternative ending, notice what happens in your body as you do so.

We are not changing the truth of your experience; Instead, we are soothing the way your body reacts to the truth.

Maybe your heart doesn’t beat quite as fast, you can be with the memory without your throat closing or feeling nauseous after you’ve inserted the presence of more support into the memory.

Join me at the upcoming Somatic Healing Retreat taking place in the White Mountains next month, where we are diving even deeper into this material.

At this retreat you will build a Somatic Experiencing Toolbox to support you in resolving symptoms of stress and trauma so you can build a healthier and more stable relationship with your body as a whole.

Together, we will learn how to develop an increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions that will help you discharge stored survival stress and access safety within, no matter what happens around you.

More info at the link in bio! 😘

👂🏼”Listen to your body” can feel complex, for a lot of reasons. What exactly is it that we are listening for? 🤨

➡️ The body speaks through SENSATION. Sensation is, in part, what you are listening for and to. All sensation originates in the autonomic nervous system. Sensation happens through electrical signals that travel up and down the nervous system.

❕The way we listen to the body is through INTEROCEPTION. This is the sense of noticing and feeling sensation inside the body.

✌🏼These two things, sensation & interoception are how we listen to the body.

🔹Reconnecting with the body requires being able to notice and feel with curiosity the sensations of the body. This can truly feel like learning a new language. It takes time and practice to feel sensation and then be able to translate what you observe into verbal communication that helps you understand the messages your body is sending.

🏃🏼‍♀️It can be helpful to enter into this type of body-listening practice with a “marathon vs. a sprint” mindset. There is no rush here. Take all the time you need.

👉🏼 The goal of practicing listening to your body is not to reach any particular destination. Rather, the objective is more similar to a journey. What is there to uncover each and every time you practice exploring your internal landscape with wonder and curiosity? What felt sense is there to discover?

👌🏼The more you understand the workings of your nervous system, the easier it is to hear the language of sensation in a way that makes sense to your cognitive brain!
