Repost @femillustration

This illustration is about women of suffrage, who stood up for our rights to vote and equality ! Votes for women were only fully achieved less than a century ago.

Suffragist women empowered themselves and learned a form of jiu-jitsu ; Femjitsu, or Suffrajitsu as self-defense to protect themselves from being ‘man-handled’ !

A few details from my Bayeux Tapestry illustrations, for History Extra / BBC History created over the years.

With the tapestry currently on display in the UK, it feels like a good moment to revisit this remarkable piece of medieval storytelling, where history unfolds in thread, image and narrative.

Procreate for Beginners | Online

Want to get started with Procreate, but not sure where to begin?

I’m running a relaxed 6-week online beginners course, starting in September.

We’ll look at the basics of Procreate, including drawing, brushes, layers, colour and some of the tools I use in my own illustration work.

There’s no need to have used Procreate before. We’ll take it step by step, with plenty of time to experiment, ask questions and see what you enjoy making.

The aim isn’t to make everyone draw the same way. It’s about getting comfortable with Procreate and starting to find your own way of using it.

Starts Thursday 17 September
6 weeks
17:30–19:30
Online

Bring your iPad and Procreate, and come along for a bit of drawing and experimenting.

An illustration I created for BBC History Magazine, capturing the Kushan Empire as a crossroads of trade, culture, and power along the Silk Road.

In our March issue, which is out on Thursday 19th February, you can find our regular columnist Michael Wood celebrating 75 years of The Archers.

Michael says "The Archers shows that the village still stands for the idea of community."

Femke De Jong created the perfect illustration for this page. Here's a sneak peak.

Justice walks the tightrope, her scales swaying between light and shadow.
Below, Siena divides — harmony bathed in sunlight, or ruin in fire and flood.
A tribute to Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s 1338 vision in The Allegory of Good and Bad Government, still echoing today.
