A mentor of mine once said " sovereignty is food sovereignty's last name." Meaning that maintaining FOOD sovereignty is just one element of building a resilient community.

At the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund, the focus is building pathways to land access and neighborhood decision-making - taking us that much closer to becoming a community that can adapt to the rapid changes happening all around us.

We have the history. We have the people. We have the know-how to make this happen.

We're in the process of reviewing 2026 applications and are looking forward to celebrating awardees, seasoned and new, at the 20th Annual D-Town Harvest Festival hosted by @dbcfsn_detroit !

See you September 19th and 20th at D-Town Farm!

This is what we do.

As the world around of shifts, the resilience we are building in our local food system continues to become more apparent.

Your salad may have traveled a long way to reach your plate.

As a #cyclospora outbreak moves through #Michigan — 4,000+ cases here alone — Amanda Brezzell has a different question: what if your lettuce came from down the block?

Brezzell studied emerging pathogens at Georgetown before co-founding @FennigansFarms on Detroit’s west side, growing food on land where houses once stood. So they can talk about the parasite and the pea patch in the same breath — including the honest part: shortening the supply chain isn’t a cure. But a shorter chain is an easier one to trace.

We are just a few days away from the annual Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund Juneteenth Celebration!

This event takes place on June 20th, from 11am - 4pm at Oakland Avenue Urban Farm ( @oakland_ave_urban_farm ).

Past and present Awardees, community partners, and community members will come together to enjoy fellowship, food, live performances, activities for children, and of course our Awardee Photo!

We are looking forward to greeting interested applicants, awardees, food advocates, supporters, and YOU very soon!

This season, our team intentionally curated events and experiences to call us back outside, to build community and develop strategies for claiming our freedom through food sovereignty and neighborhood resilience.

When you stop by, feel free to:

- Shop the free farmers market, pantry, and community stores to meet your needs.
- Join the work crew to help us keep the place fresh.
- Visit us for monthly events, including art workshops, community dinners, skill building workshops, and more.
- Just relax/meditate outside.
