Ectropothecium incubans (var scaberulum?)

This one is quite the beauty. Decorating the trees and limestone towers with blankets of green, it really gives off an enchanted fairy forest vibe. Under the microscope the leaves look so similar to Isopterygium but on a large scale it behaves as Neckeropsis does- engulfing the forest around you. Very confident about this one because it matches the herbarium collections I found online.

I have (so far) made it through 24 of the 37 bryophyta genus listed in this 1967 key (plus additional ones that were not documented in the key). In just four months ! Yay!! I have gotten pretty much nowhere with the liverworts lol fml by @ferncels

Leucobryum (boninense)

I am not entirely convinced this is L. boninense. The last three slides are from prof Yamaguchi. I sent him my photos to see what he thinks. My key only lists this species and the Mariana’s archipelago connects to the Ogasawara archipelago but I just wanted to make sure. The prorate leaf tip cells lead me to believe they are the same but the impossibly tiny sporophytes have me questioning things. Unfortunately I do not always get a photo in situ because it’s hot as hell out and I can’t be bothered 😩 really regretting that right now. I’ll let you know what the GOAT thinks and update the post :) by @ferncels

Syrrhopodon revolutus

I’m kind of geeking out over this one. It has SO many interesting features. The border is thiccccc with linear cells and then the lamina is isodiametric. I think that’s what’s making the leaves appear so wavy. The apex has a neat little cup feature that appears to hold gemmae, and there looks to be gemmae in the leaf margin as well? The hyaline cells go all the way up to the middle of the leaf. There’s just a lot going on here and it’s just so freaking cool!

I have my work cut out for me this week. Found lots of new species on my hikes. Luckily I’m at home sick so maybe I’ll have time to ID them all. by @ferncels

Coenogonium leprieurii

What an incredible find! I collected this specimen thinking it was moss but that didn’t seem quite right. Threw it under the scope and I was even more confused. I am so grateful for my little internet community because within minutes a new internet friend reached out and told me it was the lichen, Coenogonium, sometimes referred to as pixie hair lichen!

Using the local checklist I could narrow it down to two species. However inspecting the spores was required for identification. Special shoutout to my long time bestie @dylans_ramosissima for teaching me the squash method and guiding me through the process. I only know anything about lichens and microscopy at all because of him so give him a follow if you wanna learn cool lichens!

Taxonomical beef????

The Russians are saying that Plectocolea is its own genus but others are calling it a subgenus of Solenostoma. This one keys out to Plectocolea boninensis in my key. I’ll let them fight that one out.

The rhizoides on this are so cool and pretty. Beautiful purples and pinks. This is my first leafy liverwort I keyed out! Say congrats to me 🤝 by @ferncels
