The Ferndale Fire Department hopes you have a fun Halloween free of fire hazards. 🎃🚒 Check out these tips to keep your celebrations safe while you decorate and cook.

Decorating Fire Safety:

🕯️ Swap out real candles for battery-powered ones to keep your spooky glow safe.

🕸️ Keep all your festive decorations far from fireplaces, wood stoves, or space heaters.

🚥 Toss out any string lights with frayed or pinched wires before you plug them in.

💡 Remember to turn off all lights before bed or leaving home.

🔌 Use extension cords properly, and make sure they're rated for the device you're plugging in.

Cooking Fire Safety:

♨️ Clear away anything flammable, such as food packages, oven mitts, wooden spoons, trays, or towels, from your stovetop and other heat sources.

⏲️ Stay focused while cooking and set a timer.

It’s the final day of Fire Prevention Week! This year's theme focused on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

Follow these safety tips from the @nfpadotorg ✅

✳️ Fully charged? Time to unplug. Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

✳️ Feels hot? Stop using it. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

✳️ Soft surface? Hard pass. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

✳️ For tools and rides, charge outside. Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.

✳️ Cheap charger? Don't chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

The Ferndale Police Department's Citizen's Academy kicked off last Thursday, and it was a great first session! 👮

After group introductions and some shawarma sandwiches, Chief Emmi and Sgt. Blanchard gave an informative presentation on the ins and outs of our Police Department. Topics ranged from policing advancements and professional standards to annual reports and our community partners. The group asked many thoughtful questions and had an engaging discussion with the Chief and Sergeant. 💬

For the second half of the session, the group took an in-depth tour of the Police Department and its facilities. Thank you to all who participated, and we're looking forward to seeing you again this week! 😁 taken in Ferndale, Michigan by @ferndalemich
