On Monday in my Law & Literature class, we held debates as the final assignment in the crime & punishment unit. Both debates brought the Cornell Seven in as part of their arguments. So today, as we moved into civil disobedience, we set Antigone to the side and discussed the Cornell Sun editorial. Students are watching. The failure of authority to protect victims of SA is catastrophic. by @fernham

@woolfmania is in town & we wanted to go to a play. We were able to get in off the waitlist to see this stage reading of a new adaptation by @360_yves (Yves Allen): a Dalloway set in Depression-era (just post-Renaissance) Harlem. What a lark! What a plunge! #dalloway #woolf #virginiawoolf taken in La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club by @fernham

The fight for an education is central to Vera Brittain’s story. She wanted to be a novelist, but she’s best known today for her devastatingly honest WWI memoir, Testament of Youth. #HerOwnVoice @beaconpress by @fernham

🚨New episode🚨 I was joined by the brilliant Prof Anne Fernald, author of Her Own Voice to discuss the first generation of women for whom the ideal of having ‘a room of one’s own’ had become a possibility.. and the social and familial barriers that opposed them. 🚨New episode🚨 How much freedom do we really have to write the story of our own lives?

In this episode of The Scholar’s Armchair, I speak with Professor Anne E. Fernald about her new book, Her Own Voice: Eight Women Who Rewrote Life and Art.

With Virginia Woolf and ‘A Room of One’s Own’ as a guiding presence, Anne tells the stories of eight remarkable twentieth-century women: Margaret Wise Brown, Eileen Chang, Vera Brittain, Muriel Rukeyser, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Una Marson, Jessie Redmon Fauset, and Dorothy Arzner.

We talk about what it means to find your own voice, why the stories we inherit can shape the lives we believe are possible, and what gives someone the courage to cross the threshold into a different kind of life. We also discuss wandering and uncertainty as creative forces, the freedom to change your mind, the relationship between art and political commitment, and the obstacles that remain even for women determined to make lives and careers on their own terms.
