POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This Fridayyyyy 10/23 at 6PM come thru High Falls and all!! Join us for Her Own Voice: Eight Women Who Rewrote Life and Art by Anne E. Fernald.

With Virginia Woolf as a guide, the stories of 8 radical 20th century women—wanderers, rebels, explorers, mentors—who made a life for themselves in spite of everything

Everything that changed in the 20th century changed more dramatically for women. Her Own Voice tells the stories of 8 radical women who responded to social oppression and helped create the modernist movement.

As we witness the strong resurgence of “trad wife” popularity in modern culture, this book calls on women of every generation to actively wrestle with old ideas about what it means to be “good” and even “lovable.” Anne E. Fernald, world-renowned Virginia Woolf scholar, argues that the stories we read shape the lives we imagine for ourselves, and offers these stories as possible templates for living boldly and creatively.

Among the women featured are:

Margaret Wise Brown, groundbreaking author of Goodnight Moon
Jessie Redmon Fauset, prolific novelist of the Harlem Renaissance
Dorothy Arzner, the only woman director to make the transition from silent to sound films
The women in this book encompass a wide range of diverse identities: Black, white, Asian, lesbian, queer, straight, mothers, aunts, teachers; novelists; poets, filmmakers, musicians, producers. Altogether, they provide an inspirational reminder that the social and political upheaval of our time is nothing new; women have been working to overcome enormous barriers in the name of their art throughout history.

🚨New episode🚨 How much freedom do we really have to write the story of our own lives?

In this episode of The Scholar’s Armchair, I speak with Professor Anne E. Fernald about her new book, Her Own Voice: Eight Women Who Rewrote Life and Art.

With Virginia Woolf and ‘A Room of One’s Own’ as a guiding presence, Anne tells the stories of eight remarkable twentieth-century women: Margaret Wise Brown, Eileen Chang, Vera Brittain, Muriel Rukeyser, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Una Marson, Jessie Redmon Fauset, and Dorothy Arzner.

We talk about what it means to find your own voice, why the stories we inherit can shape the lives we believe are possible, and what gives someone the courage to cross the threshold into a different kind of life. We also discuss wandering and uncertainty as creative forces, the freedom to change your mind, the relationship between art and political commitment, and the obstacles that remain even for women determined to make lives and careers on their own terms.

Hot off the presses by my friend and colleague Anne Fernald— my copy arrived today! A group biography of 8 tremendous women of the 20th century, inspired by Anne Fernald’s career as a leading feminist modernist scholar: MARGARET WISE BROWN; EILEEN CHANG; VERA BRITTAIN; MURIEL RUKEYSER; SYLVIA TOWNSEND WARNER; UNA MARSON; JESSIE REDMON FAUSET; DOROTHY ARZNER. “HER OWN VOICE is about the bravery of ordinary women. The stories at its heart are of women writers who, late into adolescence— and even into adulthood— show every sign of obeying a conventional social script, and then, their lives take a turn: they change jobs, take a leap into political activism, commit to earning a living, leave a male lover for a woman. What combination of social change, family context, and personal bravery makes such change possible?” Congrats Anne, and thank you for telling a story that helps me understand my own book’s subject, Sylvia Beach, as well— you’ve helped me place her inspiring breakthrough to becoming a leading modernist bookseller and publisher at 32 in a much broader context.

So excited for my friend Anne Fernald’s new book about nine pathbreaking women writers, HER OWN VOICE: EIGHT WOMEN WHO REWROTE LIFE AND ART. One of the foremost Virginia Woolf scholars in the world, Anne is a superb critic as well. Woolf is here, but I also can’t wait to read what Anne has to say about Margaret Wise Brown, Muriel Rukeyser, and Jessie Redmon Fauset, among others.
